Hi Alex,
Thanks for posting more images.
With the low shutter speeds, are you shooting hand-held or on a monopod/tripod? The guy swimming, using the 2xTC, 1600mm, at 1/125th, hand-held? If so, pretty impressive.
I have a copy of the lens on the way, I'm going to have to adjust my thinking when it comes to shooting at F/8.0 and above.

All images shooting handheld. No tripod or monopod. The OSS of the lens is very very good.

Alex, is this a production lens or one of the early samples from Sony? Mine is shipping today and I should have it by Wednesday or Thursday.

Okay, these are NOT anything special, but it's all I could do today after my 400-800 arrived this afternoon (bought here on FM B&S, brand new, USA model). All 3 images are at 800mm on the A7RV, AF on, and stabilizer on mode 1. The two flower photos were taken at about MFD (just under 12 feet) and have a very narrow DOF as expected (shot at f8). The umbrella image was about 50-60 feet away. These were converted in ACR which did a much better job than DxO - both of which have no profile for the lens yet, so I expect raw processing will get better once those profiles are released. ISO 1600 and 1/640 shutter speed. Overall, I have a good feeling about the lens after such a limited sample set. AF was very quick with the lens and the A7RV. I had a couple of shots of some branches with the sky as a background as well, but they displayed some CA. That should be easily resolved once lens profiles are released. Hopefully tomorrow and Friday I can take some more interesting shots of birds and other things to put the lens through its paces.
Overall the lens felt easily handholdable - not much worse than the 200-600. The lens hood is very nice and actually attaches securely. I'm 71 and think I can easily handle this lens for extended periods of time. I'm also now 3 months into a strength training program which has helped a LOT with holding heavier lenses.
I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of other images on here as people get their hands on this lens.

first attempts in the backyard. crappy, gray Michigan light (or lack thereof)
initial thoughts are that I'm very impressed. IQ is definitely close enough to the 800PF for my uses, which is the lens it'll be replacing.
the only zoom I've ever used that had better IQ was the Canon RF 100-300 which is 3-4x the price.
Sony did a nice job with this one. looking forward to using it a lot this summer for loons
also.. all of these were meant to be at 800mm (as that's where I'll shoot it 99% of the time). any difference in focal length was me awkwardly bumping the zoom ring since I'm using a silly arca swiss plate and not a dedicated foot.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing... That said, honestly none of these pictures look really tack sharp to me, compared to what I am used to with 600mm f/4 or even 200-600mm. Not sure if it is my eyes, or the lens, or just the user error...

My first few images looked soft after generic processing in DxO, but then I tried processing in ACR and things looked considerably better - more sharpness, less noise, and overall better appearance. I'm hoping that DxO releases the profile for this lens ASAP and they eliminate the issues.

So far they look miles better than 200-600 images, obviously not near 600 f4 levels.
Right about on par with the 800PF.
Also - DXO doesn't have a profile yet. Once they add that, I expect it'll be a significant improvement.

What is ACR? I might have to try editing in LR or something if they do have a profile

Adobe Camera Raw. It handled CA better than DxO as well. I had significant CA with a bright background against a tree branch about 60 feet away. I would think the profiles for the lens will be out soon.

I don’t know but I’ve actually been pretty happy with the sharpness and the overall IQ from my 200-600 over the years that I have had it. Yes, it doesn’t match my 600/4 but not too far from it in good light, from the sharpness standpoint!
