I got my 50/1.2 II and 35/1.2 IV lenses yesterday. The new black design is really great. Unfortunately, I have a problem with the front focusing on the 50/1.2, so I have to return it.

I own both the 35mm and 50mm versions (the latest of each).

They're not always on my body only due to size, but I'm always reminded of how good they are when I do manage to bring them out.

For a minute I was using them religiously as adapted AF glass on my Nikon Zf.

If anybody's learning about/considering this lens, it's worth picking up a previous generation chrome version 2nd hand.

Lovely examples of what you can do with this lens Fred.

Do you think they will come out with a new version of the improved 40mm for the Sony E-mount?

Honestly, I do not think Cosina will release an update for the E-mount, since they already produced the "SE" version, which is much smaller and lighter than the original E-mount version.

However, I am not sure what happened to the 'SE' version. Was it discontinued?

Yes, all 3 CV SE lenses were discontinued back in January 2023. I think it was a pity and a bit strange decision as they seemed to be selling better than the original 40/1.2 and 50/1.2 when both options were available in the market. I still keep the SE versions of all 3 lenses as I found them to be nicer match for my A7CII and A7C and I had no need for clickless aperture option of the original versions.

Thanks for refreshing our memory Juha. I’m not sure, but the only reason I can think of is that the original version sold better than the "SE". Maybe the de-clicked aperture and the deeper front element were more appealing to buyers. I shot with both versions extensively and preferred the smaller SE edition.

We can now look back on the discontinuation of those SE lenses and notice a few things. First, Cosina was discontinuing those E mount lenses just after they started production of the Z mount 40 f/1.2 two months earlier and were about to release the Z mount 50 f/1 in a month. It might have been a production capacity issue that they could not bring out these new Z mount lenses and continue to have regular and SE versions of the 40 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.2 for Sony E mount.

At the time, however, I remember being confused about why Cosina didn't at least make the 35 f/1.2 in a regular version as they discontinued the SE version. In hindsight, however, that is more understandable. They were only a year away from releasing the VM 28 f/1.5 and only a year and a half away from releasing the E mount 75 f/1.5. The plans for these lenses might very well have been in the works, and perhaps even the plans for the E mount 28 f/1.5 that was released about 2 years later. To me a lineup of Noktons of 28 f/1.5, 40 f/1.2, 50 f/1.2, and 75 f/1.5 makes a lot more sense than 35 f/1.2, 40 f/1.2, and 50 f/1.2 and you can see why if they had plans for a 28 f/1.5, they might skip the 35 f/1.2, especially when they already had a quite different but still popular 35 f/1.4. I think we can actually consider ourselves fortunate that they kept the 50 f/1.2 at all given that they likely knew they were going to introduce the 50 f/1 in E mount and so far at least they have skipped the 50 f/1.2 for Z mount.

If I can speculate just a bit more, then I also think Cosina might have been rethinking their E mount strategy around 2020. They likely made the decision to make Z mount lenses somewhere about that time, and they also had the major success of the E mount 50 f/2 APO Lanthar. It was the first non-macro E mount lens designed for E mount before it was designed for Leica M. I think Cosina at that point decided E mount lenses should be tailored for E mount and not simply be Leica M lenses modified to work on Sony cameras. The 75 f/1.5 E mount lens which likely was under consideration at this time is a great example of how they make a lens for Sony E mount that was markedly different from the lens for Leica M. This lens needed very little if any adjustment for the sensor stack thickness of Sony cameras, but Cosina didn't do a simply adaptation. They gave the lens a notably bigger diameter (74mm vs. 62.8mm) and a notably longer focus throw (180 degrees vs 100 degrees). These changes did increase the weight, but did they decrease vignetting and increase usability of the lens on a Sony camera? I am not sure, but personally I really appreciate a longer focus throw and I think the bigger diameter might well have reduced vignetting, which in turn may have improved the bokeh, but I haven't seen tests for that.

In that context, I think the SE lenses might have been going in the opposite direction to where Cosina was planning to take E mount lenses. That is my guess as to why they were discontinued. That said, I would still love to see a 35 f/1.2 for E mount. At this point, however, I would like to see all the f/1.2 lenses designed with a bit better color correction and especially better correction for purple fringing and axial CA. I would love to see a new 35 f/1.2, and redesigned 40 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.2 lenses that diverged more from the new Leica M versions and had better correction of aberrations.

Maybe Cosina felt that the SE line simply added too much choice and too little differentiation that perhaps didn't increase sales while simultaneously added production costs and complexity, ultimately unjustifiable for actual total sales volume for both versions.

Re-release for mirrorless IMO would only make sense on technical grounds for the 40mm given the improved bokeh performance. The previous version is currently available for all three mirrorless mounts, so maybe. But I'd speculate that this might not happen until Cosina clears existing inventory of the 40mm for each mount, which might be considerable if they make these in batches to last a while.

The other two lenses are either now entirely absent in mirrorless (35mm), or only for FE mount (50mm). With Nikon and Canon we don't know how much is due to licensing restrictions compared to Cosina's market analysis. Clearly, the most adopted system by enthusiasts, FE mount, has the most options, but compared to M mount remains quite limited in breadth. On one hand, one can adapt M to any mirrorless if one does not care about sensor stack optimization, which can suit niche 'character' lenses and simplifies matters for Cosina by making all mirrorless mounts accessible via M mount (though the new 75/1.8 Heliar for FE mount is an obvious exception, perhaps because the SA control feature is best manipulated via live view composition). But to me it suggests that mirrorless is a harder sell for Cosina because a likely majority of those systems' users have increasingly mainstream priorities and preferences (since the release of Sony's first FF FE mount cameras), particularly AF capability, and/or preference for zooms. And those preferences are amply addressed by the abundance of Sony and third party offerings, which continues to grow thanks to a number of recent brands out of China. My impression is Nikon Z and maybe Fuji, are mirrorless niches more complementary to Cosina, particularly the appeal of Nikon's retro designs that mesh well with Cosina's interest in 'classic' and 'vintage' releases, both in optical and design aesthetics. Sony has done nothing similar that places priority on retro design appeal. And I'd be extremely surprised if Canon ever does (being said as a longtime Canon user).

All that said, we're also talking about Cosina here, who are infamous (amongst us, at least) for being unpredictable. They're quick to discontinue a given lens for apparently no reason, release multiple variants of a single optical design, at least mostly in M mount, and randomly reintroduce updated versions of previously discontinued models. So really, we're totally speculating.

From my perspective, I would not be surprised if eventually the 40mm is updated for all mirrorless mounts once, as I suggested earlier, stock of the existing model sells out (Cosina might be sitting on a lot of inventory) in order to streamline manufacturing, at least of the aspherical elements in this design.

IMO, the next logical FE release should be the 28 APO for all three mainstream FF mirrorless mounts, if Cosina can negotiate licenses.

I did ask Cosina about the discontinuation of the 3 SE lenses at CP+ 2023. The impression I got from one of their staff was that there were some lineup strategy decisions behind it and it seemed like Cosina wasn't entirely satisfied with how well those had sold... They might have also thought that the design style of the helicoid wasn't received well, since only those 3 lenses in E-mount used that style and later Cosina introduced a different helicoid style for the newer E-mount lenses (since 2024).

I think original 40/1.2 sold really well for the first couple of years after it came out in 2017 so comparing to that the SE line probably didn't sell as well, but on the other hand the SE line seemed to be more popular in Japan than the originals from 2020 until they disappeared from the market, and in the 2nd hand channels it's nowadays not so easy to find the SE versions, and when they become available they are usually sold swiftly. I think there was still demand for them but they went away too soon. Anyway, I'm happy they were released in E-mount though and I will certainly keep mine in use

The pricing of the originals and SE versions was different too, the SE version of 40/1.2 was available in Japan at around 88K yen while available as new whereas the original was always more expensive and it's nowadays 121K yen. The Nikon Z version of 40/1.2 is 88K yen (almost always backordered) and Canon RF version is 96K. In E-mount system the 35/1.4 Nokton classic works as the "cheap entry model" at 67K yen (almost always backordered) and Nikon Z & Canon RF don't have that option, so I think 40/1.2 is priced more strategically for those systems.

Anyway, I also don't think that Cosina has near term plans to release new versions of these in E-mount or other mirrorless mounts. I'm expecting 28/2 APO as next new lens for mirrorless (though nothing's been announced about it as of now).

Today is by the way the day when Cosina would announce any new lens release for July. I'm keeping an eye out to see if 28/2 APO VM will get announced today.

Sure, I'll add a picture of the lens mounted on the Sony body. I also tested it on the Sony to show how it performs with the thicker sensor.

I was thinking of picking up the Z 40/1.2 again, but after seeing this, it's the Mark II or nothing at this point

I see no reason they WOULDN'T release this for Z at some point but who knows when it comes to Cosina.
