Yup. That's the way I'm looking at it. I told him the other day, if that camera contributed even 1% to him receiving that scholarship it's all well worth it.
Exactly what I was going to say. Stuff happens. How many times have we read here about someone pulling out a bag that they forgot to close 2 feet above the concrete . . . or a camera that wasn't quite secured to a tripod . . . or a dog running by a table with a strap hanging down . . . and these are mature, often compulsive adults. It's just a camera - and not even a particularly top-of-the-line multi-thousand dollar one at that. Incredible job on the scholarship - full stop.
I'd look through the Nikon refurbs or sale on a Z50II with the kit 16-50, 50-250. That camera is a pleasure to use.

We're headed to our local camera shop tomorrow. He's got a big road trip planned and he's probably flush from his graduation party this weekend I'm sensing a new camera is in the works I'll also mention that he is very much into bouldering and climbing. He's also already completed all 46 of the High Peaks in the Adirondacks with his family. That camera has been through a lot of rough stuff. I'd like to see him get a Z50ll because he already has the 16-50 and the 50-250 but I know he's leaning towards an A6400/6700 at this point.

Maybe look at an Olympus Tough - which makes a lot more sense for bouldering and climbing . . .
Teenagers (and the teenagers around them) are going to make mistakes (even if unintentional or caused by someone else). It is just part of life and we all were there at one point. Congratulations to your grandson on such a prestigious scholarship award. It sounds like like he clearly has good integrity and is sufficiently guilty/remorseful which speaks well to his character. It is often a very hard thing to have to try and answer to a grandparent for something like this culturally speaking whether it is his fault or not. I appreciate your good attitude about it all. (Spoken as a former teenager currently in the early teen phase of parenting).
The ribbon cable is worth a repair effort because hey, it may be a $500 Z50 but the camera that is beat up may become the camera that is able to be put in harms way for videography in the future because it has already been to metaphorical hell and back!

Thanks Robert. We're over the top proud of him. Architectural and Environmental Engineering. Quite the opposite of a "stupid teenager"
Congrats to your grandson on the scholarship and being accepted to Clarkson. As an RPI grad I can't completely approve, but my wife is an architect and as a civil engineer myself I'm happy to see someone going into a closely related field. Far too many college students are choosing other fields of engineering and the architecture/environmental/civil industries are really hurting for new college grads. Feel free to reach out if he ever has questions or wants a local contact (Albany area).
