p.1 #1 · Optimal Z6iii Birding settings

So a friend of mine has lent me his z6iii for a couple of days that I am going to use with 500pf. As I currently use a d500, I am not familiar with the z6iii, so any help/guidance starter settings to try on the z6iii would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest watching a couple of the Backcountry Gallery (Steve Perry) videos on set-up. He provides some great starting points. When customized to your shooting the Z6III makes a pretty decent birding camera. I picked one up a few months ago to back up my Z8. On a recent trip I ended up shooting the Z6III nearly as much as the Z8.

If I end up customizing the settings and I am in U3, that won’t affect my friend’s default settings and I will only affect U3, correct? D500 doesn’t have custom Ux settings so I not too familiar with that.

How do you set your d500?

I have had most luck using AFC dynamic 25 on the d500

Just save you’re friend settings first before you change anything. When you give it back to him apply those saved settings and you can’t do any harm.

No clue why no one has given you actual advice yet.

Set to AF-C. Set burst to High. Set AF Area to Wide-L. Set AF tracking sensitivity (a3) to the most delayed value. Set VR to Sport.

Play with animal subject detection on and off. That's all there is to it.

Thanks Scott. This worked great: I tried wide S and wide L with AFC and animal detect; and also tried AFC-S for stationary birds.
Noticed a few times EFV lag when trying fast moving ducks, so that’s something for me to consider if I ever go for Z6iii. I am hoping the Z8/Z9 EVF has less lag and may trickle downstream eventually. The camera is impressive; much better than I thought and a definite upgrade from d500( except the resolution), which is what’s stopping me from getting it.

Thanks for the quick advice.
