Eyeing a couple of lenses from Map Camera in Tokyo at great prices. I have NEVER needed to have a lens serviced by Nikon but I am sure as soon as I buy a grey market camera I will need to service it
They repeatedly state that they will not provide WARRANTY service for grey market stuff, which I am OK with. But nowhere do they say they will not provide service, period.
Has their policy changed? I have a question out to them but I don't expect answers in a timely manner
Buying it from MAP would not be grey market technically. Obviously NikonUSA would not be liable for warranty if these are new items. They would be warrantied in Japan. If you buy an item overseas previously they would perform paid service if you provide the original purchase receipt. Keep your receipts from MAP and you should be covered if a repair was needed outside of warranty here in the US.
Edit: Thinking about it further maybe is gray market since you are not standing in the MAP store in Japan.
I heard from a friend that it did. He buys a fair bit in Japan when he visits and he has any work needed done by the service center in Single Hill—which he has to pay for.

This is correct. Nikon USA will service any Nikon gear if you can prove it was purchased from an authorized dealer/outlet in the country it was sold in, which means providing a receipt.
