I’ve been in contact with the owner of Awesome Grips and he says an X-E5 grip is in the works…

Those look pretty cool, but over $200 for a grip is out of my range.

Update on my accessories.

I've tried the Smallrig leather case/thumb grip and the Haoge l-grip/thumb grip. I'm going to go with just the Haoge l-grip. But since I didn't buy from Amazon (I've been trying not to), I can't just return them easily.

Anyone interested in taking them off my hands?

For those who want to protect their wallets from whim buying, it isn’t a bad idea to get the camera without the questionable accessories, use it for a couple of months, and then decide whether or not you really need that stuff.

Trust me when I say we’ve all been there at some point… ;-)

While I agree we may all be over eager to buy some accessories for the basic body grip or thumb grip really should research up front before buying a camera body to understand if your usage will require those. After all the camera may never get used if you can’t get out and shoot with it minus a grip if you can’t comfortably hold the camera / lens combination you plan to buy.

I know it’s much more difficult to find a camera store to see and try a new camera body your interest in but just make sure if you buy a new camera, which you have no experience with, you can return it with in a reasonable trial period.

My point, as a person who has had a lot of cameras, including an earlier XE model… is that you really don’t need a lot of these accessories. While it is easy to get caught up in the “I must have this for my new camera” excitement, many people are going to discover that most or even all of those little extras are pretty superfluous. (Don’t forget that web sites and influencers push them in part because of the affiliate fees they get when you click their links to purchase.)

So just get the camera. Use it for a month or two and see if you really need those things. If nothing else, waiting will help you be a smarter consumer when it comes to selecting among them.

As a long time (13 years) user of Fujifilm’s APS-C cameras (XE, XPro, XT) for half of my photography, I’ve never missed a half-case, an add-on shutter button, a so-called thumb rest, a screen protector, “protective” lens filter, or any of that other stuff. (Yes, I do own an L-bracket, a remote release, lens and sensor cleaning materials, a third-party foot for my 50-140 lens, an extra battery or two.)

Anyway, enjoy that new camera.

I think this is my 15th (?) rangerfinder-style digital camera. I typically get grips for them. For many of us, the only question is which design feels better for a given camera. SmallRig was better for the X100v/X100VI and X-T5; Haoge was better for my D-Lux 8, and before my X100VI, I tended to prefer leather half cases over aluminum L-Grips.

I should have edited my post to say that my points were for people who don't have experience with such a camera. If someone like you always adds a grip to your rangefinder style camera then you understand your reasons for doing so.

But for new buyers who don't have experience with such cameras, I think my advice is solid.

A quick update on a new case that arrived last week from Akara Labs:

It has transformed the X-E5’s ergonomics when using low and medium-weight lenses, with essentially zero weight penalty… I couldn’t be happier.

In combination with a hotshoe-mounted thumb-rest (I’m using one from JJC), I’m now able to very comfortably use my 16-50mm f2.8-4.8 lens (weighs 240 grams) with the case mounted.

I’d say that my 18mm and 33mm 1.4 primes (weigh ~ 360 ga) also work, but still feel a little too heavy for all-day use, and work better with a full-sized grip like the Smallrig.

I’ve been in communication with the company and suggested a couple extra mm of grip depth and the case may even work with those larger primes.

Highly recommended!

Got a cheap half case, skin, and shutter button. I had also bought a SmallRig thumb grip, but took it off because it made the buttons hard to reach.

Where did you find the half case?

What wrist strap/shoulder strap would you recommend for the X-E5? The OEM shoulder strap has more bulk than I prefer. I use a PD wrist strap on one of my other cameras, but even that seems more than I need on the X-E5.

Tenog asked: "Where did you find the half case?"

I got mine from B&H and it is very good quality. They have it with a Black Friday sale.

I use a cotton wrist strap on all of our Fuji bodies. Works well for us. You can find many different brands on Amazon, eBay, etc. Here is an example from B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1314591-REG/megagear_mg939_cotton_camera_hand_wrist.html

Hell, the more I look at the close ups of the black fuji cameras, the more I second guess my color choices, lol.

Coming back to the question of straps and grips another alternative is the Peak Design Micro Clutch. Its a good alternative for carrying the camera around but can be tricky to fit depending on hand size.

I had an Optech Cam Strap QD, so giving that a try now. Sizing is just about right for me.
