This 25-200/2.8-5.6 lens is seemingly a direct competitor to Sigma 20-200/3.5-6.3; while it loses in FL at the wider end, it gains in aperture all across. I wonder how the two compare in weight and what their apertures are at, say, 100 mm.

Maybe it's just me but it looks a little shorter, or maybe that's just my wishful thinking.
Having f/2.8 only at the widest end might seem like a gimmick to some, but having a 25-30mm f/2.8 (guessing here) could come in handy when lighting gets bad vs. having to carry a small 2nd lens like the 24 2.8.
The current Tamron 28-200 weight is 575 grams, the new Sigma 20-200 is 550 grams. I would be surprised if the new Tamron 25-200 is far from those numbers.
Also I guess that the 25 mm figure will in reality mean it is 25 comma something mm quite close to 26 mm at the wide end. This since lens manufacturers often round to what is in their marketing favor (so down in the wide end, and up in the long end), but that remains to be seen when someone tests it.
As for size, the PDF hints: "The new G2 model maintains its compact size".

This appeals to me more than the Sigma - I don't shoot at 20mm very often, if ever, so the extra speed is appreciated. I'll be interested to see the tests.

Having recently added the 20-70/4 (to a 17-28/2.8 and the 28-200), both the 25-200 and 20-200 are interesting but can't see doing a swap for either. But will be fun to watch the commentary as they hit the streets and get used.

If it has the same rendering as the 28-200 I am in!
I have personally found that the f/2.8 has come in handy in lower light conditions; it isn't a gimmick. But since I typically pair this lens with a fast prime, I can't say that I really trot it out much after the sun falls while traveling.

I have been enjoying the 28-200mm on local hikes and on vacation when I don’t want photography to get in the way of family times. I will likely upgrade to the G2, since Tamron has a good history of making those a bit better optically. One time when I meant to bring a fast prime to walk around Disney Springs at night I realized when I got there I still had the 28-200 mounted, and the f/2.8 at 28mm worked just fine, I was glad to have that option.

Maybe Sony will feel threatened and finally release a "new and improved" ver 2 of their 24-105 (or maybe 24-120?), smaller, lighter, optically improved with. aperture ring?

I just preordered from my local shop. No price or arrival date, yet. My 28-200 has served me incredibly well over the last four years of worldwide travel, and I am looking forward to version 2 in a huge way

As someone who really enjoys the 28-200mm, I'm really excited for the idea of a faster-focusing, sharper version.
But Tamron missed my #1 desired improvement - this lens really, really needs VR for the 100mm+ range. I would much rather have that than 3mm more on the wide end.
Hoping that this lens is out to rent for a November trip to evaluate.
