Looks like an excellent lens -- very versatile too. You captured some very nice images with it, and I applaud you for including the cat photos!

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this lens to have a lightweight good quality set up for birding with my OM-1 II. It looks like a fantastic lens but…$3700?
I’m wondering if I’m better off buying a used Sony 100-400 GM for my Sony a7RV. I can get one for about $1600 - half the price of the OM. I"d appreciate your take on this.

I mostly do landscapes and more recently got into birding. My main gear has been Sony A7RV with 24 mm & 50 mm GM primes, along with a 70-200 F4 G.Now that I’m older (75) I find my Sony A7RV is getting heavy for a walk-around camera. I have a 200-600 G for birding which works fine on a tripod but now I find I can’t handhold it, and carrying the tripod + gimbal + big lens is too much for me. .

I recently bought an OM-1 II and 12-40 Pro kit as a travel/walk-around camera and loved it. I sold my Sony 200-600 G thinking I’d use the OM 100-400 II for birding but when I tried it out was disappointed - heavier and softer than I expected. I thought IQ wasn’t any better than my Sony A7RV + 70-200 F4 + TC 1.4, and cropping in on the 61 megapixels. And the weights of the two systems weren’t much different. So I returned the OM 100-400 II.

Sony A7RV + 100-400 GM weighs a bit more than the OM-1 II + 50-200, but is manageable. Both lenses take TCs. OM lens is brighter (2.8 vs 4.5-5.6), newer, probably crisper but…$3700. Sony isn’t as bright, is an older lens but used with a 61 megapixel sensor gives me lots of resolution and room to crop in. OM camera has higher fps but I’ve found the 15 fps on Sony is adequate for my needs.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I'd buy the Olympus 300mm f/4 PRO used. Great lens!

In the end, it's really about reach. A 61MP sensor gives a ton of cropping power to 'reach' a bird, but the lenses get heavy pretty quickly. The MFT sensor gives you little cropping power, but the lenses can make up for it by providing the reach you need.

Also, Nikon probably produces the best small long lenses for full frame, but only the Z6III is a light camera and it doesn't have that much resolution. We need a Z7III.

Personally, I tried Nikon, Sony and Canon and ended up with Olympus and the 150-400mm after I sold my Canon 600mm f/4. But before that I had the Olympus 300mm and it's a great lens for the money and the size can't be beaten. (I actually still have one, for when the 150-400mm is overkill).

I certainly would not waste $2200 buying the $3700 50-200 f2.8 over the $1500 40-150 f2.8 when I bet most people would notice no difference between the two with images posted on the web.

Hey!! Thanks for the question - sorry for the late response.

So I had the 100-400GM when I was using Sony. I get it. It's cheaper and full frame.

My easy answer is that I would immediately choose the OM-1 MarkII and 50-200 2.8.

I went in heavy with Sony for a bit. Then even heavier with Z8/ 100-400 and 180-600 for a lot.

None of these combinations were great for me. I have NOT used the OM 100-400 - but I used the Pana Leica for a while. The 50-200 blows it away without reservation.

I was just shooting tonight with the 2x Converter - I got back to the hotel and I'm loving the results from the combination.

This is truly an amazing lens, and the system is much stronger for it - especially if you're skill level is high!!!!

Let me know if you have more questions!

I understand that sentiment, but I can barely use my 40-150 f/2.8 after using the 50-200 2.8. It's in an entirely different class!

I sell my photos to those who want larger prints - this is definitely worth it!

Now they need to make 300mm 2.8 and and all "old" FF users would be in the M43 camp. I'll buy one in a hart beat for sure.

What, in your opinion, makes it better than the 40-150 f/2.8 Pro which i have? The Sync IS? the extra 50mm? I have Gandalf. Do I really need the 50-200 f/2.8? Want, yes. Need, TBD.

I'm curious: What is your definition of "larger prints?" What is the largest print you've had made from your best lenses?

The millions of people that viewed and enjoyed these Coloramas had no idea what camera was used, what lens was used, or any technical details about the gear used. They did not care either because they felt good about the feelings the images conveyed to them.

Anyone here ever had prints made anywhere close to that size that were admired by that many people? No.

From 1950 until 1990, Kodak’s Coloramas were familiar to millions of commuters in New York City's Grand Central Terminal. The panoramic photographs—18 feet by 60 feet—presented an idealized view of life in 20th-century America and promoted photography as an essential leisure activity. The George Eastman House recent major exhibition celebrated the 60th anniversary of Colorama. Coloramas were promoted by Kodak as “the world’s largest photographs” and called “technically remarkable” by Ansel Adams, who photographed several. The towering backlit transparencies were 18-feet high and 60-feet wide, each illuminated by more than a mile of tubing. A total of 565 Coloramas were publicly...Show more

Thanks, for some reason I did not notice that there was a picture of the bottom of the foot the first time looked at the set of pictures.
