p.1 #1 · MF-12 macro flash with R2 nano trigger on OM1 and OM1 mkII

A friend was visiting and had the opportunity to try the MF-12 macro flash on his
OM-1 mkII with the Flashpoint R2 nano trigger and compared its performance to
my mkI when used with focus bracketing. I have seen very little information on this anywhere and wanted to report my observations in case it is useful.

It was a bit fussier to set up than anticipated. Not unsurprisingly
my friend that eschews flash of any sort had the flash turned off and the single test shot for the TTL
metering doesn’t like e-shutter. Also a bit like on Sony, the trigger can be
finicky in getting seated well. I had to take it off a couple times to fix
that. Once it is going it is fine. I’ve never had that issue with my OM-1
mkI but the Sony trigger is notoriously finicky in this way. Once it’s going
just leave it on and it is perfect.

So you take the metering shot in TTL (no e-shutter; EFC ok or mechanical
shutter) and just one touch on the R2 nano trigger to convert to manual. This
is called TCM—-“TTL convert to manual.” It has to be turned on in the menu on the trigger. I chose .1 sec recharge time—- it has to be non zero. The focus bracketing with flash is MUCH faster on the
mkII. It is eminently useable. It is almost too slow on the mkI to be
practical. Now I may have to upgrade. Drat. Curiously the focus bracketing uses the e-shutter but it still
works and flashpoint or Godox recommends not to use the e-shutter at all. . Down side of that is the sync speed is 1/100 sec.

Surprisingly I have seen no good tutorials with this or even decent
documentation of any sort.

Thank you for this post!
Is there only one specific trigger for Sony that will work with this ?
And would you say that the flashes are strong enough, even if the subject is a bit further away - say 3-6 feet? Curious if this will work for mobile portraiture - but this might be a really bad idea (I also eschew flashes
Thanks so much!

Just comparing the R2 Pro II versus the R2 nano
Knowing me I won’t want to play with many flash settings …
Do you have experience using both?

I have the R2 but not the R2 pro. I know the R2 pro has the TCM mode and even a designated button for it. When chasing critters I need to keep the rig as compact as possible so prefer the nano. I can't imagine the R2 pro would not work.
