Battery life on the Fujifilm X-E5?

p.1 #1 · Battery life on the Fujifilm X-E5?

I am really intrigued by the X-E5 and am thinking of getting one.

The only thing that is holding me back is the NP-W126S battery that it uses. This battery has been a constant source of frustration when I had the X-H1 due to its short life on a daily basis. I had to keep multiple batteries to get through the day, which made it a bit difficult to use.

My X-H2S, GFX100S II and GFX100RF use the NP-W235 which is significantly better. In the case of the GFX100RF, I get a couple of days worth of usage sometimes.

I was wondering how many shots or how long the NP-W126S last on the X-E5?
Thanks.

Battery life depends on usage. Like an electric car, it is different from user to user. Just take two or three spares and call it a day. Swapping batteries you can do in seconds.

My X-T50 uses the NP-W126S battery and I don't have a problem. I agree with Nielk Mike, just take a spare and not worry.

How hard is it to carry a spare in your pocket? Isn't that better than carrying a larger camera to accommodate a larger battery?

Love my X-E5. My other X'es are the T3 and Pro1, so no IBIS, no 40mpix et al. Not too much battery drain, same battery. I felt the difference for sure. So now I'm not using boost mode and I set IBIS to mode 2 (shooting only). Now it's fine, no big deal.

I don’t have a concrete answer to your question, though it would be worth comparing Fujifilm’s claims for earlier XE models to their claims for the XE5.

It is a bit difficult to compare official Fujifilm specs on different XE models since they are listed in different ways. But it looks like the XE5 in “normal” mode may get fewer shots out of a battery than the XE4 did.

XE5 specs (in part) are:

Economy Mode: Approx. 400 frames
Normal Mode: Approx. 310 frames

XE4:

Approx. 460 frames (Normal Mode) When XF35mmF1.4 R is set.

As pointed out earlier in the thread, there are a lot of variables that make it unlikely that you would get exactly what these figures suggest. Things like battery age, performance mode, how quickly you have the camera automatically shut off between shots, how much you review shots in camera, what lens you use, and more can affect it.

A decent place to start contemplating this is to look at how many exposures you typically would make in a day… then get a second battery in case you are concerned that one won’t be sufficient. (Swapping out a battery is a whole lot less trouble than it used to be to change film every 36 shots!)

(From my perspective, it would have been better for Fujiflm to design theXE5 around the newer, larger battery found in the XT5 and XH2, etc. It isn’t that much larger, but it holds more charge… and for some who use more than one Fujifilm camera it is better if they all use the same batteries.)

That last point was my concern when I decided to buy the X-E5. I like to always travel with two cameras even if I don’t always carry both around. When I bought back into Fuji earlier this year (had been away for a while) I pre-ordered the X-E5 and then went looking for a used body with the same sensor and IBIS and luckily found a mint well priced X-T5. Both great cameras IMHO and love there output but the disconnect on batteries is an issue even though I’m OK with spending the money for genuine Fuji batteries having to carry both types is a problem. If it’s trip away from home the need to take two different chargers makes it worse since I’m not a huge fan of charging batteries in the camera which is a work around.

Oh well just a issue you have to be aware of.

I feel the same way. I had thought of getting a X100vi as a complement to my XT5 for street/travel photography. (I do most work with the 27mm f/2.8 on hte XT5, so I could easily use the X100vi with 23mm for that sort of stuff, and then put a different lens on the XT5.)

Two factors convinced me to not do it. One is that while the X100vi (or the XE5 with its 23mm f/2.8 pancake) are smaller than the XT5 with a pancake lens, the difference isn’t that huge — the XT5 is still a pretty small camera. But the other issue is the incompatible batteries… and therefore incompatible chargers.

While it is true that carrying an extra battery or two isn’t a major inconvenience, it seems like an unnecessary one. I understand that Fujifilm wanted to make these cameras (X100vi and XE5) very small, but I can’t be the only person who would be OK with the slight increase in size to accommodate the newer and more capacious battery.

My hunch about battery life in the XE5 — based in part on Fujifilm’s own specs — is that it is probably similar to what it is in other Fujifilm cameras that use the same battery, with the XE4 being a good model for estimates… except that Fujifilm’s specs seem to suggest that the battery will last for slighlty fewer shots in the XE5.

As you point out, it is at least a factor to consider. I still expect that few people using the XE5 would go through more than two batteries in a day, and that many won’t exhaust one battery.

p.1 #9 · Battery life on the Fujifilm X-E5?

As you guys have pointed out, it’s the hassle of carrying two chargers for the different batteries that also adds up. In addition to the shorter battery life.

While I like the flexibility of interchangeable lenses in the X-E5, I think having the GFX100RF and using the same battery as my X-H2S and GFX100S II is a big plus. So, for now, I will be content with the combination of the GFX100RF as a street camera with either the X-H2S or the GFX100S II for everything else.

The reason I was interested in the X-E5 was to use it as an interchangeable camera with the GFX100RF during my travels. If it would work out, then I would cull my gear to better reflect what I most use. I might actually consider the X-T5 in future considering it’s not that much bigger than the X-E5.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

For someone used to hauling around a GFX (multiple GFXs?) system (or two!), the XT5 will seem like a small camera!
