The Canon 200-400mm f/4 was 128mm (5") diameter x 366mm (14.41") long and weighed 3.62 kg or 7.98 lbs. The Nikon 180-400mm f/4 was similar size and weight. 400mm f/4 is the limiting factor here defines the diameter. They might shorten it a little with it being for a mirrorless body vs DSLR's on the
Canon and Nikon. And they might get the weight a little lower. However, it would be a very different lens to the current 100-400 GM.

Considering what they did with the new 300GM and how just off the charts remarkable that lens is, I'm expecting something pretty wild for the 100-400II and 100-400 F4
PetaPixel's review of a7 V might have leaked the upcoming FE 100-400mm F4 GM. In their video around 9:57-10:23, they were using a F4.0 telephoto zoom. Hope it was indeed the new lens that they have been testing.

I took a look at the video. And the EVF footage does indeed show the lens zooming at f4. But it doesn’t say at what focal length though
Instead on a 100-400 GM F4, it could also be a 70-200 GM F2.8 II shooting at f4. They showed some stills just before the section you pointed out where the pictures were labeled with 70-200 GM II and 24-70 GM II. So they were using both those lenses during filming
So when might Sony release a new lens? I was sort of hoping along with the recent a7-V, but alas no. Is there a typical time of year for lens releases?
Since the 100-400 f4 seems unlikely to meet the needs of most based on price and weight, how about bringing out a 100-300mm f4 GM?
Sigma had one back in the day and it was a really nice lens. 82mm filter size which is consistent with 16-35 GM II and 24-70 GM II and the weight would be in the ideal range. Using 1.4X gives you 420mm f5.6 and 2X is 600mm f8 the same as the 400-800 at 600mm (or there abouts). They just need to make it sharp enough to work well with TC's like the 300 GM does.
Hmm, a 100-300mm f/4 GM would be nice. And, if it worked nicely with the 1.4X would pair well with the 400-800mm. Only time will tell what Sony is actually up to, but it is a nice idea.
After seeing the prices of 2870F2 & 50150F2, I have no desire for a constant F4 100-300/400 zoom.
Also current 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM already weighs 1400g w/o collar n hood, 1600 with it. It's one very heavy dense lens. A constant F4 will push it farther than Nikon's 180-600 which weighs 1950g and approaching Sony's 400-800 2400g~ territory.
I don't know how they can make it brighter and faster while shedding weight at same time.
I would like a constant F5.6 100-400, or 5.6-6.3 100-500.

Do we know how large and heavy a modern 100-400mm f4 will be? The 300GM was significantly smaller and lighter than any 300mm f2.8 lens that came before it.
Apart from new modern (computer driven) lens designs, there is also the rounding off of the true actual focal length and aperture, meaning it may in reality be a 380mm f4.2 lens or something like that.
In any case I would not make premature statements on how big and heavy the 100-400mm f4 will be, I think it is safer to say that it is going to be sharper, smaller and lighter than any preceding lens of its kind, knowing what Sony has been doing with its G-master lenses in the past years.
I actually think that it is a serious lens to consider for myself, to add as a small, lightweight and versatile lens to the 600GM.
I owned the 200-600G lens twice and sold it twice because however good for the price, it certainly is no G-master lens, and the 300GM would have the 2xTC glued to it.
The 100-400 could do with the 1.4TC that I múch prefer to a 2xTC and would effectively be a GM version of the 200-600G (that only goes to around 560mm anyhow) and would be faster and no doubt sharper at f5.6 than the 200-600G at f7.1: I always needed to close to f7.1 to get good contrast and sharpness with the 200-600G.
Put me in the "doubt it" camp, but it'll be interesting to see what they do with the 100-400 update nonetheless. I just hope it's not another $5K+ lens because lens price inflation has been getting a bit silly in recent years, even before tariffs messed up global trade.
To me, one of the big selling points of the current 100-400 is how close it focuses, so I hope they keep that aspect. The current version also hits f5.6 pretty quickly in its zoom range (typical of most zooms TBH) so I'd be happy with f/4.5 or f/5.6 if the new one's going to be constant aperture.
I suspect we might just end up with another 100-400 f4.5-5.6 that's optically better, lighter, and about 30% more expensive. Kinda like the 70-200/2.8 update.

The front element will need to be at least 105mm to attain 400mm f4. That would indicate that the lightest it will be is the same range as the 400-800mm f6.3-8 G. So, it won't be super small or super light. IF (and only if) the IQ with a 2X TC was demonstrably better than the 400-800 G, I would probably buy it. If not, I would stick with current 100-400 GM and 400-800G.
I just got back from Yellowstone and I am quite impressed with images from 400-800 G.
