p.1 #1 · What are forum members thoughts on the Fuji 15-45mm lens?

Thinking about a nice small, light, zoom lens for an incoming X-E5 and wondering if the Fuji 15-45mm would be a good lens for that camera. I have a Fuji 23/2.8 which I know would be a great lens for the X-E5.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

It's inexpensive, a power zoom and optically slow --really slow for the focals-- at 3.5 to 5.6. The last point is a deal breaker for me, and PZ is not attractive either. They're a lot more money, but if I wanted a smallish, lightweight zoom like that, I'd probably go with a Sigma 18-50 and have the full range f2.8.

It is slow and PZ - but it covers FF equivalent 23mm to 67mm. The 76mm can be extended with 2x crop of the X-E5 to 135mm. The image quality is very good for a zoom of that size and price. The only downside is AF. You need to watch it at the the wide end up to 23mm and even make sure it doesn't focus beyond infinity at 45mm. The Sigma is nice - but has a lot of CA. The 15-45 keeps teh X-E5 small when shut down. Here are some sample images: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjCyWEh (now full resolution images, not downsized to 4K).

I didn't like my copy. Centre sharpness was ok but it could be soft in the corners and sometimes softer on one side compared to the other, which might have been the OIS. I didn't like the power zoom aspect either.

Overall, I thought it was worse than the Fuji 18-55 f2.8-4.

If your needs are not demanding it could work.

I seems like a low-end “consumer” lens designed to keep costs low and appeal to more casual users — perhaps folks wanting a “real” camera for their vacation shots, etc.

The focal length range and small size are appealing, and if it works well enough I can see what a XE5 owner, for example, might be interested. But the design is intended to cut costs, and that f/6.3 aperture (!) at 50mm is not great, especially with a APS-C camera where diffraction starts to rear its head a bit sooner than on FF.

Thanks. And some of them are up to 2.5x crops.

I need a WA/UWA Fuji lens GF mount. I have the Fringer EF-GF adapter but have NOT mounted my EF 24-70 to the 100s ii. I need sharp crisp images, if taken correctly, for this zoom. f6.3? NO!

YES! Thanks for the images!

This is a X system post, Dan. And why don't you have the GF20-35? And why haven't you slapped that EF on the Gfx now that you have the adapter? I would suspect a zoom to vignette pretty bad but there is only one way to know.

I should qualify my comments by saying I view shots on 28inch 4k screen and want the occasional ability to print detailed landscapes large (larger than 13x19). If you only want to post online, only intend to print your best shots occasionally up to 13×19 and dont mind some corner softness sometimes, then the 15-45mm should be fine. But then again most lenses should be good for that.

On the other hand if found the Xc 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 pretty good. It’s a lens that is similarly cheap, and while it is a bit larger, it has the benefit of not being a power zoom.

Dan, just so you know, that little GF 20-35 is possibly even sharper than the 45-100 -- and the pair is unbeatable for ultimate GFX flexibility!

The 15-45 is… fine. Sharpness is fine. Corners are… fine. Even the power zoom is fine. No real significant flaws. Stop down a bit for better performance.

I just re-bought one, to use with my X-E5. This lens has two compelling virtues for me: first, it’s tiny. Second, it performs well in IR up to f/5.6.

I also have an 18-120 and various primes, but if you want a small single zoom kit, you can’t beat the 15-45!

(Well, maybe that new 13-33….)

I agree with most of the cons that have been mentioned in other posts but despite them I completely second CKreuger's remarks. I have an X-E5 and the 15-45 is the lens that spends the most time on it. I do like the 23 mm, too, but the 15-45 mm is the one that I usually choose. It's a zoom, it's small, and the focal length range suits me perfectly.

Optically, it’s fine. The lens is compact, stabilized, and very lightweight. The power zoom is annoying.
A good alternative could be the new XC13-33mm f/3.5-6.3 OIS lens.

That’s sounding more in our aging, especially for those looking for a small, inexpensive zoom.

When they are available, I will check that lens out.
