Not sure what you mean? Looks like a pretty standard telephoto hood to me. Not really any longer than any other 85mm lens hood I’ve used. Plus I’d rather have a slightly longer hood that reverses than a screw in one that stays on all the time.

And I'd rather have a short hood I don't ever reverse (on a small prime like this, not a big zoom, etc), because I use hoods for front element protection, so, here we are at yet another impasse, Jordan

I wretched looking at that photo again

I went ahead and ordered the Evo 85 since it's available today in Z mount...liking what I'm seeing from it....can always return it if it doesn't suit my needs, but I think it'll be a very nice choice. It's saying delivery on Friday.

Do you have Nikkor 85/1.8S also? Would really love to see some direct comparison.

I don’t own it any more, but I used to. I can do impressions, but won’t be able to do a direct comparison.

I wouldn't say it's an impasse. Just personal preference. I was just surprised by the comment since it's no different than pretty much any other 85mm+ lens hood length. (Length of hood is generally based on angle of view up to the point where the front element is fully shielded). The Nikon 85/1.8 S hood is very similar in length (though the lens is much larger). The 85/1.2S hood is much, much larger, Even the hoods from the F mount 85/1.8G and 85/1.4G are basically the same length.

Funny how the nikonrumors post on the 85 EVO release shows plenty of pictures on the 85 PRO mounted on a Z7II. Guess someone mixed up their press image kits

Yeah, the PetaPixel article and the B&H listing for the EVO both show the Pro lens instead. Makes me wonder if the sample photos being shown are for the correct lens or not.

I’m pretty sure the samples are correct since they’re the same as on the Viltrox site for the Evo. There are also several reviews already out from the Evo for more samples if you want.

Who cares what camera the lens is mounted to for press shots?

I’ve tested a number of lenses whose hoods I replaced with shorter hoods, with very little impact of flare angle. It makes me wonder how much testing actually goes into designing these large hoods, especially the non-petal type. Once you get to something like the 85 1.2, it’s simply ridiculous.

They show the wrong lens mounted on the camera.

Maybe switch on brain first, post snarky comment later?

I'm pretty sure that the hoods are designed based on ray tracing, probably as part of the lens design process. The physical length of the hood is more of a marketing decision. So long as the hood reverses on the lens to fit in the bag, larger is better IMO. For the big teles you can get Zemlin or some of the OEM shorter hoods.

Viltrox make those series: Pro, Evo, Lab, Air.
So Pro is max what they can do, Air is cheap crap.
What are LAB and EVO? What is the difference in those series?

First, Air is not cheap crap. The Air series lenses are inexpensive, yes, but the point is to be compact and lightweight, and they share the same housing to save manufacturing costs. The build is actually a little nicer than Nikon’s cheaper lenses like the 40/2 and 28/2.8. They use stepping motors for AF, which are decent in speed and rather quiet. There’s no weather sealing on Air lenses

Optically, they are rather excellent. I own three of their APS-C Air lenses and have tried one of the full frame ones too, and they are quite well built for what they are, and optically they are actually great.

My 25/1.7 and 56/1.7 are tack sharp from wide open, have little to no distortion, outstanding contrast and very nice bokeh. My 9mm f/2.8 isn’t quite as sharp as the other two, but it’s a 13.5mm equivalent lens with also very low distortion, and very good cross frame sharpness, for $200.

The EVO series is next in the line and it’s only one lens, but it appears to be good build quality with a good feature set with moderate aperture and generally compact form factor with excellent optics. These also use STM AF motors. These have some weather sealing.

The Pro series is the next in the line, with high end build, fast apertures and so on. Some earlier pro series lenses use fast STM motors, but the more recent ones use voice coil motors, sometimes multiple. Very good weather sealing.

The LAB series is their top of the line, little to no compromise on everything. Very fast aperture, top of the line optics and build. All use multiple VCM motors for AF. Very good weather sealing.

Thing is, since they started making lenses in these four lines, optically they’ve all been good. Some of their earlier lenses are just OK, but every entry in these four lines punches well above their price optically, and as I mentioned earlier, that includes the Air lenses. (There are also some outstanding lenses from before they made these lines, like the 16mm f/1.8, which would either be Pro or LAB if released now and is an absolutely stellar lens…one of the best UWA lenses I’ve ever owned.)

Viltrox is very much in the same position Sigma was when they first started releasing their Art series lenses…up and coming, making glass that is better than it has any right to be for the price, and branching into the higher end while keeping prices low.

p.2 #16 · Viltrox 85mm f1.4 PRO and f2.0 EVO

'Chinese manufacturers of lenses for photographic cameras (not phones) held an estimated
10.3% of total sales in 2023. This market share is primarily held by third-party brands...which have risen to prominence by offering affordable alternatives to major Japanese and other international brands.'

'The agility of Chinese firms is supported by a domestic manufacturing ecosystem that allows for faster production. Indeed, many Japanese camera brands manufacture a significant portion of their products in China. The shift towards Chinese dominance is reshaping the industry.'

'China is a massively shifting market for ILC shipments. After accounting for just 19% of the global market in 2022, China’s significance has increased every year. China’s share of ILC shipments was 24% in 2023, 27.6% in 2024, and is a whopping 30.5% so far in 2025, making it the largest market for ILCs by over five percentage points (the Americas is in second at 25.2%).'

So, 19% to 30.5% in three years. A 61% increase.
And they don't prefer luxury fixed lens cameras. 'The Americas and Japan are the hottest markets for these cameras, with the Americas having a 26% share of shipments so far this year and Japan at 23%. China, meanwhile, sits just above Asia with a 16% share.'

So, more lenses, designed for Chinese sensibilities and aesthetics. Don't feel lonely when buying one..

Here is the classification of the different Viltrox product lines:

LAB: an experimental ultra-high-specification lens with a small screen, control ring, and VCM motor
PRO: a high-specification lens with an aperture ring and a VCM motor
EVO: only with a stepless aperture ring and an STM motor
AIR: lightweight, no additional controls, with STM motor

That’s from the Viltrox website right? I’ve read about the „stepless“ aperture for the EVO series before but according to reviews the aperture ring does have click stops and can be de-clicked, same as the PRO series.

Yeah, you can clearly see the aperture click switch on the side of the 85/2 EVO. I should have mine in hand in a few hours.

Edit: Now looking like Amazon decided to send this on the truck that's making very late rounds, and the lens is scheduled to be delivered to my office about 3 hours after the workday ends, so I might not get it until Monday. Frustrated, as I wanted to use it this weekend for a shoot.

Well, Amazon's delivery estimate was poor, and it was delivered a half an hour ago!

I only have first impressions, but here they are:

Size: This is even smaller than I thought it would be. I expected it to be about the same size as the Nikon 35 and 50mm f/1.8S and f/1.4 lenses - but it's actually a little smaller. Very compact and fairly lightweight too.

Build quality: Very, very good. I was expecting this to be built more like the air series but with some extra features, but it's built closer to the high end lenses. Both the bottom of the barrel near the mount and the front barrel part with the filter threads are matte finished metal. The middle barrel, focus ring and aperture ring are plastic, but they feel very nice. The whole lens is extremely solid, with zero flex anywhere. Focus ring turns smoothly and with a bit of damping. Aperture ring when clicked has nice detents, though a bit light, though the ring turns smoothly and without any play. There's a nice rubber sealing gasket at the rear. Honestly: feels very impressive in the hand.

AF: Obviously need to test in a variety of situations. Around my office, speed is pretty good, and accuracy has been excellent in the various shots I've taken around.

Optics: Very sharp from wide open across almost the whole frame. Only the extreme corners show some softness. By f/4 the extreme corners are very sharp too. Good contrast, very low aberrations, and very nice bokeh on the whole. Obviously I also need to try this out in a lot of real world examples, but first impressions are all positive.

Viltrox keeps knocking it out of the park, IMO.

Quick size comparison with the Nikon 50/1.4.
