28mm equivalent?

p.1 #1 · 28mm equivalent?

I’ve decided to sell my Leica M which I often used for street photography. I found that I don’t need the resolution and that the smaller MFT options suit me just fine. But I use zone focusing when shooting street and often use a 28mm lens. As far as I know the MFT system has no small 28mm equivalent lenses with a depth of field scale. So, I guess I have to use the 12mm instead. And I’m thinking of keeping a Fuji as well, because Voigtlander makes a 18mm for Fuji X.

Anyone else missing a good 28mm equivalent or know of another alternative?

I believe you are correct. I was looking for a small, fast, high IQ prime around 28mm for travel images and settled on the Leica Summilux 15/1.7 but I don't zone focus so the lack of a dof scale is moot. I replaced the horrible lens hood & cap with a square metal one.

This is a link somebody provided from DPR that is suppose to list just about every MFT lens.

The Pansonic Leica 15mm is more like a 30, but it doesn't have a zone focus scale. You don't say what body you're using, but something like the OM1 will autofocus faster than you can think, so no need to ever zone focus.

I use CAF+Tracking if there are a lot of people around, or face detect with fewer, and it's really quite brilliant. Use the cross type AF pattern with center priority Just lock on your subject and it will follow along in the frame.

You can also set a preset MF distance. There's lots of options.

The OM 12 f2.0, 17mm f1.2 and the 17mm f1.8 version 1 all have the focus clutch.

If you're really wedded to zone focus, Rokinon makes a manual focus 14mm f2.8 with a very nice DOF scale.

Just wanted to say that I had no idea this spreadsheet existed. Thanks for (re) posting it!

I saw the Rokinon, but it’s enormous.

I saw later that Laowa produces a small 14mm f/4 for M mount. That could work with an adapter, which are small as well.

I've never actually seen one, your post prompted me to look around and see what was available.

With your OM-1 ( I have no experience with the Pen-F) your AF will be extremely reliable. Is there a reason why you won't use AF?

I used M4P bodies for years, and can see why zone focus is your thing, it's kind of the only way to work quickly.

I cannot recommend the 15 P/L lens enough, sharp, small, light, and very fast to focus. Even with my Lumix cameras that didn't have reliable CAF, with SAF it was brilliant.

It’s mostly because I can trust zone focusing, while AF can do its own thing. Esp. when shooting from the hip.

Have you tried the Pre-MF and the AF limiter functions?

You can set the Pre-MF to whatever distance works, and then set your AF-ON button to always go to that distance.
