p.1 #1 · Fringer Pentax P645-GFX auto focus adapter.

I just received the adapter, have not tried it yet. The user manual (small as it is) recommends NOT allowing the camera to select the shutter speed. I am a seascape/landscape guy and usually shoot at f11 to f16. I mostly use Aperture Preferred Automatic on the camera. I set the F stop, select ISO, and allow the camera to select shutter speed. If the shutter speed is to low to hand hold or stop motion, I will boost the ISO until the shutter speed is to my liking. I will need to change my shooting regime while using the adapter. Anyone using a similar adapter here, this is what I guess I will do (the camera is a Fuji GFX 100S):
1. Set the Pentax lens ring to the Green "A" (This is a must do, it transfers aperture selection to the camera).
2. Set camera top dial to "M"
3. Use front Command Dial as a "Toggle". Push in once & rotate to change "F" Stop. Push in again & then rotate to change ISO.
4. Use Rear Command dial to Vary shutter speeds.

The two used Pentax lenses I purchased are the 300mm f5.6 AF, and the 400mm f5.6 AF. Being a very senior citizen, AF and IBIS are very important features to me. This adapter is reported to maintain AF, allow IBIS, and transmit EXIF data. I will report back with my experiences with this adapter.
PS: I have been a very long time Pentax medium format user, I had a Pentax 67, 645, 645AF, and 645D, so I am familiar with Pentax Optics.
Thanks for the input

I have this Fringer and use it with a 35/3.5 "A" and 45-85/4.5, 75/2.8 and 150-300/5.6 "FA". It works very well. AF is quite slow and hesitant as expected. IBIS is good.

Mostly shoot in aperture priority with auto iso. Lenses set to "A" and control aperture with rear wheel. There is actually less chatter and clatter with these lenses and this adapter, than with a native lens like the 55/1.7. Adapter will stop down the lens on half-press and you can hear that faint noise.

I wasn't aware Fringer recommends not allowing the camera to select shutter speed. I will need to check this again. I pretty much always shoot in aperture priority, setting the aperture with camera body as instructed and letting the camera decide the shutter speed.

Hi Geoff DF: Here is a cut and paste from the Instruction booklet. If you shoot Aperture Preferred and had no problems, I would love to adopt that method with the adapter, but the warning scared me away.
Thanks for the input
Dave

FROM THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET:

Adapter configuration file: Connect the adapter to a computer
using the cable included. You will see a drive named FRINGER. There is a
file named SETTINGS.INI in the root folder. Currently, it doesn’t support
customization. Please don’t modify it.
Aperture setting: Please always set the aperture using the command
dial on the camera. Don’t use the aperture ring on the lens! Make sure
the aperture ring is set to the “A” position. Or it may interfere with auto
aperture control.
Shutter speed setting: Manually setting shutter speed is
suggested! Setting shutter speed to auto in AF modes may cause the
aperture blades move frequently with noise and flashing of LCD or EVF
when environment brightness changes. That may interfere with view
finding. Be noted, when preview EXP./WB in manual mode in camera
menu is set to Off, you need to use MF mode to avoid the issue.
AF settings: AF-S mode is suggested. On cameras with PDAF support,
i.e., GFX100(S) series, AF-C also works. On other cameras, i.e., GFX50 series,
3
please don’t use AF-C mode. In both cases, Face/Eye AF is supported. To
get a balanced AF performance in terms of success rate and accuracy,
setting focus points to medium size is suggested. Before releasing the
shutter, you may focus multiple times on the same object to improve
accuracy.
Note: Manual focus mode is suggested in some circumstances for the
following AF lenses due to lens performance limitations. - HD Pentax-D FA 645 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR Macro (in all shooting) - SMC Pentax-FA 645 120mm F4 Macro (in macro shooting)
Image stabilization settings: On cameras with IBIS, such as GFX100,
GFX100S, and GFX50S II, etc., all the FA/DFA/DA lenses and a part of A/LS
lenses (including A35/3.5, A55/2.8, 75/2.8 LS, 135/4 LS, A150/3.5, and
A200/4) support IBIS. Please set IS mode to “Continuous” in the camera
menu. Lens SR (Shake Reduction) is not yet supported (on DAF 90/2.8 and
DA28-45/4.5).
Focus bracketing settings: Always use AF to set the working range
and start position. If you manually turn the focus ring of the lens, the focus
bracketing function won’t work correctly.

I see they said manually setting the shutter speed is "suggested" not compulsory unlike setting the aperture ring to A. Anyway I have never noticed the chattering of aperture blades they suggested might occur. I wonder if this was a warning for video rather than stills.
FWIW I am shooting on the 50sii.

I tried the 300mm and 400mm lenses today using the adapter. I shot Aperture Preferred Auto, and it worked OK. So far, so good.
