p.1 #1 · Problems with Profoto A10 and connect trigger with OCF
I am having issue with my A10 and connect trigger. When trying to back light a couple I could not get my A10 to trigger.
Setup:
Flash was about 10ft behind couple on light stand. I tried to get it to work at various distances from 5ft to 30ft from the couple. The couple blocked my line of sight to the flash and we where beside a small stream. I could only get it to trigger if I stepped to the side and had line of sight to the flash. Both the flash and trigger had full battery.
Am I doing something wrong, seems to me this should be easy for this profoto gear..

The Profoto triggers are radio, not infrared, so line of sight is normally not an issue. What trigger are you using and which camera? Sometimes it’s a connection issue between the trigger and the camera hot shoe. Normally the Profoto equipment is rock solid. At one time there were problems with Sony camera hot shoes, but i think those were resolved.

I’m assuming you mean a Profoto trigger designed for Nikon cameras. Did someone tell you that a Profoto-Nikon trigger would work on a Leica camera? Profoto does make triggers specifically for Leica. Those should work fine. Sell what you have and get one of those.

Yes I have read that you can and I have used the profoto Nikon connect trigger in manual mode. It is only the center pin that is needed and used. They do not make the connect version for Leica yet, only the expensive pro version. For what I am doing I do not need TTL.

Try changing the channel on the Profoto connect. You’ll have to use the app. It is by default set to channel one, which at this point is a pretty crowded frequency even outdoors. Lots of competition with other RF controlled devices, and can often lead to misfires. I usually set my triggers to channel 7 or 8, and that seems to reduce my misfires. In buildings with lots of tech, I’ve had the Profoto air TTL and connect pro triggers stop working for a few seconds because of interference. It seems like it’s gotten harder to find a clean frequency to use in just the last five or seven years. Or give a try updating the firmware across the board.

Thanks for the tip! I will try that next time.

No problem. I was having a similar issue a month ago with a connect Pro. In my case the trigger would stop working when I got a few feet away from my generally reliable D2 but the three other lights (B10s) fired fine. Tested a standard air and air TTL trigger, in addition to the connect pro. Switched to channel 8 on the connect pro and reduced misfires, but not completely, which we assumed was because we were in a convention center with a ton of interference.

I'm on my third time repairing my A1X and they want $300 this time. The pins have bent a few times which is more of an issue with Sony's mount than Profoto but I don't have that issue with my Godox flash. This time they're telling me the flash tube needs replaced. I hardly use it and I've never heard of a flash tube needing replaced on an on camera flash. They charge $50 plus $25 shipping just for looking at it so I'm out $75 or I spend $300 to fix it. Probably the last time I buy a Profoto flash. I'm tempted to just tell them to keep it and eat the $50.

I've replaced over a dozen flash tubes for various 50-80J class shoe-mount flashes. Initial symptoms are discoloration of the reflector/tube, then intermittent firing, then no firing, but it can go directly to the intermittent or no firing.
Some flashes are easier to service than others. Be sure to discharge the flash capacitor. We used to use 25W resistor for that if the flash cannot be fired and shut off before recycling. In the latter case it will only be about 60V rather than 330V.

Sony’s implementation of flash is unique. While part of the problem may lie with Profoto, part of the problem is also with Sony’s flash implementation. I’ve always noticed a lot more bad Profoto comments in connection with Sony cameras than Nikon or Canon. On other cameras the Profoto equipment is pretty stable. My Profoto equipment (3 B10s and 2 A1X’s) have been very good for several years. In that time I had to send in one AiX and replace 1 Air-TTL transmitter, but that’s about it. I shoot with Nikon and agree that Profoto repairs are not cheap.
