I was hoping they create smaller lenses. They’ve sent the Eureka for me for testing and it’s a great lens.
I sold the 28mm 1.4 M type II as I didn’t like the style / size on my M11M but the performance is stellar as many here already know.
Let’s see what they have for us next week

I am not saying it is a 35mm focal length, but the aesthetic of the new Eureka definitely follows the vibe of the Advocate Ilford Limited. Just the style, not the optical design.
I will start a review of the new Thypoch lens as soon as it's officially announced.

It might signal a step away from a further expansion of the Simera range, in favor of returning to their roots, so to speak. Most people find reasons to dislike the Simeras. The last two of them are M-mount only. The 75mm was released in March 2025, so it looks to be all over for their foray into stills photography.

I long wished they made a Eureka version of their Simera 50mm 1.4. And that they would go wild with it, the Eureka 50mm f2 is pretty tame.
I feel they are more daring with their cinema line, they do not render the same it seems.

It's actually hard to point to their real cinema line because they have so many of them (Vespids, Arles, Catta zooms, anamorphics) - the Simeras are a 'testing the water' exercise by DZOFilm. The 'daring one' I want to see is a 100mm f1.4; they already make one of these in the Arles range, in a 13/8 design.
They can just do a scaled up 75/1.4, all the opposition in 105/1.4 is like a kilo or much more in weight (Sigma or Nikon), so a 500 gram 100/1.4 would be not just daring, it would be groundbreaking. They need a 100mm in the Simera-C line too, because the cine world opposition all have 100mm in their brand new ranges: Zeiss Nano, Cooke SP3 and Leitz Hektor.
As Hollywood plummets into the depths, streaming and high end commercial light cine is growing huge (ads, TV series, etc.) fast. That's why these illustrious makers rushed out these more affordable (or less unaffordable!) ranges, all of which have six lenses. We have five Simeras, so it made perfect sense to add a sixth.
But no, we get this 'back to the future' offering instead. DZO might not have liked how their Simera lenses were received in the very fussy photographic circles, where people are more concerned with petty stuff like lens markings, the width of focus rings etc. than actual optical quality.
Even if DZO sign off now, a 100mm would still make a great parting shot for those of us who find the Simeras very effective 'tools' and so enjoyable to use. I'd buy one in an instant, that's how good the 75mm is (for what I do). It's also very common in the cine world to repeat a design across several focal lengths. Or they might shrug their shoulders, exit stage left and return to the fray in a few years time.

.
You are so right man- Its crazy to think people want a useable DOF scale and nice haptics in a lens. Its shocking really-

How about chipping, improving the MFD and having a lens that works well with the sensor stack in the mount it’s released in? CV does these things at a similar price bracket. All very unreasonable.

I am guessing that this is the long awaited and much anticipated 28mm f/2.8, which promises to be a compact and lightweight 28mm with decent corners. Of course I could be wrong. Either way I am looking forward to the announcement and to Fred's tests. If nothing else the retro design should be interesting!

I'm a sucker for compact pocketable 28mm lenses.
Since the crowd is often split on MFD, was wondering if Thypoch would consider implementing a switch that would provide a hard/soft/no stop at 0.7m instead of aperture de-click.

I was thinking about buying the Simera 28mm 1.4, but I actually don't need the aperture wide open. I am wondering if I should wait for the Eureka instead.
How is it possible to make a lens this thin (even if it's F2.8)? Is there a huge compromise in image quality when comparing to the 28mm F1.4?

Compare to regular lens, you get lower edge and corner image quality and less optical correction in pancake design.
