When I arrived at the West Pond of Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge here in New York City there was a huge flock of greater scaup on the north side of the pond. I set up on the south side in a location we photographers call "The Runway" as it's known for birds taking off and landing over this spot on the earthen dam that created the West Pond. The pond is about 1/4 mile in diameter so I had a great view of the entire flock. These photos span about 45 minutes.
