"We confirmed that some ILCE-7M4 cameras may not operate properly after installing the version 6.00 update. We have suspended the update while we investigate the cause."

A Reddit thread indicates at least two people had their PCB damaged during the update. https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyAlpha/comments/1paxu57/sony_a7iv_60_firmware_update_horror_story/

You actually do an update right away for once, and then something like this happens.🙄

Hopefully, they take accountability and fix these for free this time

"We have also confirmed that the camera enters power saving mode when the monitor is closed, regardless of the setting for [Power Save by Monitor]. This issue can be resolved by Initializing all the settings to the default settings.
(December 1, 2025)"

What does "all settings" mean in this case? A complete reset or what?

Is it coincidental that both users are in Australia? Or is that because of their timezone being the first to see the update availability?

I'd be interested to know if the second affected user, like the first, updated from version 2.0 to 6.0. Everything seems to be working fine for me. I hope it stays that way.

Wow, what do they even do if it bricks someone’s camera? Do they replace/repair it for free?

Stop. I have this problem with the power-saving function too. When I close the active monitor, the camera immediately goes into power-saving mode, meaning the viewfinder is black and you have to tap the shutter button to wake it up. Changing and saving the settings doesn't help. But I'm certainly not going to reset my personalized settings to factory defaults just because of this. It's really annoying. Oh well, since the update was withdrawn, version 6.1 should be coming soon.

I'd always waited a few weeks before installing every update. Because it was always unnecessary and I liked the rotating display, I didn't wait this time and installed it immediately. Bad luck.

Someone in another thread said they were going from 4.0 to 6.0 https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyAlpha/comments/1paek9c/hey_guys_i_uprgaded_my_a7_iv_software_from_40_to/

In any case, I think the whole thing with the power-saving mode that always kicks in when you close the display is a bad joke. It's certainly not some hidden function that you could easily overlook while testing the software. I find it really poor of Sony, I have to say.

I went from version 3.0 to 6.0. Testing the camera now, I see that it goes into power saving mode when I close the monitor. While this should not happen, I don't think I ever close the monitor. So I likely would not see this issue in my normal use. The camera goes back on with a half press of the shutter, so it doesn't seem to be a big problem, at least for stills photography.

I open and close the display very often, as I always keep it closed when I'm not using it. Therefore, I definitely consider this a problem and hope that it will be resolved.

You would think, being a tech company, Sony would know how to properly make FW updates, but here we go again...

Luckily, I don't have any issues with mine on 6.00. Updated it using the app. Used it on a shoot today perfectly fine and recorded some video (granted, 1-3min clips, so it never overheats anyways), but that sucks for those affected. Currently doing a 4k24 test with the screen flipped out to see.

Clearly, you don't have this problem because you don't turn off your display by closing it. This bug is an integral part of the update.

You have to reset the camera to the default settings? That creates a lot of work for users to reset everything back up. I wonder if copying over the settings from a file after a reset will recreate the problem? I think I will wait until Sony fixes the problem prior to doing an update on my camera.

My camera had the power off on screen close issue after the update to v6.0. Initializing the settings resolved the screen closing power bug. I was able to load my previously saved settings via the creators app. There was a warning message saying settings might not be applied if the camera firmware was a different version than the saved settings. The reload appeared to work despite the warning. However, the camera rebooted with the touch screen enabled which I definitely had disabled in my saved settings. IPTC and copyright info isn't included in the saved settings which is mostly what I was trying to recover so I didn't have to retype it again. That little factoid is mentioned in the camera "help guide" so apparently it is a feature and not another bug.

After restoring the settings, the screen closing power bug was not present.

Due to the touch screen settings not appearing to restore correctly, my confidence in the other settings being correct is low. So I just reinitialized the camera again and will reset all my preferences manually. PITA.

If anyone has found a way to upload or set copyright info without using the in-camera method, please share.

Another fun fact: the Creator App didn't recognize my previously paired camera after the initial firmware update and made me pair it again. It did this again after the settings were restored. I also had to run the "check available functions" option in the app both times to get the "saving and applying camera settings" option to appear.
