As a hobbyist with a large pond and lots of wildlife behind my backyard, my Sigma Sports 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS is attached to my A7RV about 90% of the time. I updated the firmware to 4.0 after reading the positive reviews I was surprised that I could no longer change the aperture on the Sigma 500mm with this lens, even after going back to the setup menu and making sure "Aperture" was assigned to the front thumbwheel, as it was before.
It has been a busy week, and with only an hour or so to try to find the issue, the aperture remains fixed at F5.6, no matter what I do. Setup for Manual, Aperture priority, etc. Nothing seems to make a difference. Shutter speed and everything else seems fine, and auto focus does seem to be improved but I cannot change the aperture on this lens! I do receive an error message stating that this feature is not supported for this lens, but don't recall seeing this message before the firmware update.
My Sony native lens do not have this issue and work the same or better, as before the firmware update. If time allows I will try other non-Sony lens in the next few days.
Please advise if anyone else with the Sigma Sports has this problem and how to fix.
Hey Brad, I updated to latest A7RV firmware and just now checked with my Sigma 500mm f/5.6, and I can change the aperture to any value with no issue. I have it assigned to front wheel also.
Is the firmware on your lens updated? I checked and the current version is VER.2.0 2024.06.20
When I did my camera update, my Sigma 85/1.4ii wouldn’t autofocus without bouncing all over the place. I updated the lens firmware and boom! It works perfectly. Try that.
Thank you everyone, really appreciate the tips. I did update the lens firmware without any issues just now but the aperture is still stuck at F5.6 regardless which mode is selected, even aperture priority mode. Pulled the battery and rebooted, no change. When I select the Custom Dial menu, I enable "Aperture" for the front wheel, but the label still displays "Av" , although the graphic display on the side shows "Aperture" assigned to the front wheel. I can assign "shutter speed" or "ISO" without any issues to any of the wheels. Good to know this didn't effect others with Sigma lens... I must be overlooking something. My Sony lens function normal with the front wheel set to aperture.
I dont have that lens, so maybe a dumb question, but if it has an aperture ring, did you bump it off the auto position? That or maybe clean the contacts.
Thank you Erictator, problem solved! I have a Chasing Birds protective sleeve on the lens and it does not have a window on the aperture ring...I always use the front wheel to change aperture and forgot about the aperture ring, particularly because it is not visible. Not sure how it moved from the auto position at the same time I updated the firmware, but that was it. Looking forward to giving it a try with the new firmware... Big relief

Woot! Super happy to help Bradford! Gotta luv an easy fix. Have fun, I keep eyeballing those Sigma 500mm sport as a lighter/smaller/sharper alternative to my Sony 200-600, and if someone figures out an autofocus 1.4x TC solution that works with fast AF, I'm so there!
Hi Eric, my Sony 200-600 has not been used since getting the Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS. The Sigma is smaller, lighter, sharper, and locks on focus more accurately. Hoping the new Viltrox TC will autofocus on the Sigma, even if exposure and Steadyshot need adjustment.
