p.1 #1 · a7rV considerations with current lens setup

Hello everybody,
I am just considerig going to a7rV or a7V, I know it's too early to evaluate a7V, but prices of a7rV are really tempting now.
I shot everything with a7rII but fast action is not my concern. At the same time I really like 42mp sensor of a7rII, becouse I can go with one prime and crop a lot later, but...
I've read that a lot of lenses are not good enought for 61mp. And here is my question - how are your experiences with lenses? Can it really be a problem?

I use Voigtlanders 15, 21, 40, 110 and Tamrons 35-150 and 150-500. I can see on Sonyalphablog that 21 and 110 are stellar, but what about the rest?

Thank you in advance for comments, best regards.

You're asking an open ended question.

Let's start with the elephant in the room: when it comes to the combined resolution of an optical system, the lens resolution and the sensor resolution are independent from each other. In other words, they both (their MTF, which is always under 1) get multiplied. This means that a high(er) resolution sensor will boost the overall resolution even for low-resolution lenses!. And vice versa: you'll get a sharper image from a sharper lens even on a 3MP camera. Therefore, when people talk about "lens X outresolves the sensor" or "sensor Z demands Y resolution from lenses" that's just not accurate.

The second consideration is ROI or practicality. Despite what I just wrote above, buying a $5K high-resolving lens to boost the combined resolution on a 3 megapixel camera is financially stupid because you can barely see the difference. And the sad truth is that a 60MP FF sensor will let you easily see performance differences outside the central 2/3 of an image even for the most high-end lenses! My opinion is that 60MP is already an overkill simply because the resolution bump compared to, a 45-50MP camera is hardly visible outside of a very narrow set of conditions, and one of those conditions is a high lens price.

In the end, somewhat predictably, it comes down to your use case. For me the A7RV is a no-brainer, because 80% of my photos are of static subjects, and they're cropped to 1x1 square ratio (Hasselblad habits don't die lol) and I often shoot around f/5.6. This means I am stopping down and blowing up only the center portion of an image where all lenses perform quite well, and I'm getting a nice 39MP output which is substantially better than 22MP I would have gotten from the A7V. So this works for me, regardless of my lens choice, but you need to examine your situation to decide for yourself.

I think there's a lot of misconception around "lenses being not good enough for xx mpx". Keep in mind that if you magnify/crop to the same extent as now on 42mpx sensor, the lenses will not be worse.

The a7rV is better than the a7rII with most any lens short of a Coke bottle. AF is also better than the older a7r series bodies .

To put things in a context, already A7rIII was major improvement over the II. Although not up to current standards, I consider A7rIII first complete and mature in A7 series.

As a current A7rV user, I consider it almost perfect camera except three weaknesses: no pre capture, electronic shutter not very usable and EVF quality drops when in AF-C (basically all time when focusing). A7V dresses two of those. Based what I know, it's EVF is not so great although should work better in AF-C.

A7V is superior in video but that is not important for me.

I would be very happy shooting A7V as my main camera in Sony system. Sometimes I really miss pre capture and electronic shutter. But then again, A7rV has no major weaknesses and excels in resolution. And the images are good. I can see that sometimes in future, If I feel I need a bast camera, I will pick up A7V when it is discounted.

I have all Voigtlanders in FE mount you mentioned (i.e. 15/4.5 ,21/1.4,40/1.2,110/2.5 Macro) and use them on 61mpx FF cameras for nearly 5 years now. They feature very good (15/4.5,40/1.2) or excellent (21/1.4,100/2.5 Macro) performance.
So they did on my 42mpx FF cams before.

All 13 Voigtlanders in FE mount that I have are either very good or excellent on 61mpx FF Sony cameras.

No experience with Tamron lenses mentioned above though.
