I ventured to Huntley Meadows, a wetland just outside of D.C., earlier this week. It was blustery and cold, but there were still some hungry birds out and about. I caught this Great Blue Heron standing on the ice, apparently contemplating how he was going to get his next meal.
I find that GBH stick around NYC till the lakes and ponds freeze over for about a week and then they head south. This doesn't happen every year so some years we have them all winter.
