p.1 #1 · Canon part cost is outrageous!

I have a 24mm Ts-e II that is missing the tilt knob. Searched online and found the right part #s - the big knob, a retainer small cover and a tiny screw. Called Canon to order them thinking $50-60 would be it. Guess what, the big knob is $157, the cover is $95.51, the tiny screw is $0.43 (I have to say this is the only part that I think is reasonably priced). The total comes to $280.21 with shipping! All I can say is WOW! Needless to say, I didn't order them. I can still use the tilt function without the knob. But Canon is really doing a disservice to their loyal customers. Sorry about my rant...

Maybe you can find someone 3D printing them?

I'd make one from cardboard and duct tape before paying that much for a hood.

The stupidly defective 100-500 tripod collar is now over $250. I'm on the 3rd one already. The first one became too loose and a piece of metal broke off of the second one in my camera bag.

There's gotta be third-party options. Actually, I think mine is, come to think of it.

You may want to check eBay or AliExpress. Sometimes you can find replacement parts that appear identical to the OEM version for much lower cost. I often suspect that the parts are sourced from the same factories.

What´s the price of that knob on the corresponding Sony or Nikon 24mm?

Sony has no 24 tilt-shift. The Nikon 24mm PC-E knobs are anyone's guess. You can bet they are not cheap either.

The Canon TS-E knobs are more complicated because the full-sized knobs don't clear parts of some EF-s (1.6x crop) DSLRs. The larger knobs are better for most cameras since the greater torque is much easier on the fingers.
Of course when adapted to RF there are no issues with clearances since the whole lens is farther away from the body.

Thanks, actually I did search online including eBay. The eBay listing that I found still costs $190. I am sure the seller knows how much they cost from Canon directly. Unfortunately, these are not common parts anyone would want to mass produce. Canon knows it, and it shows. Interestingly I watched a Youtuber recently complained similar price gouging by Harley Davidson (

). In his case, at least it's not too difficult to find replacement part from 3rd parties.

Yes, I am aware of this issue with certain camera models. But they are still simple parts and don't see such high prices are justified. Anyway, I can still do the tilting and lock it into position without that knob, so functionally I am not missing much. I think it is even easier to tilt without using the knob, just lacking the fine movement control. But tilting is less used for me.

IIRC the knobs are the same for each function. I mostly used the tilt at ± 0, 1/2, or 1 click.

Companies do this to comply with Right to Repair laws without having to actually give consumers a true self repair lane. It's not just Canon.

The standard EF bayonet mount ring is $57 from Canon.

It can be found for $30 on eBay and Amazon, probably on Aliexpress for even less too.

For around the same price, you could get a "parts only" TS-E lens on eBay to pilfer the knobs and have extras.

I'm surprised it costs that much from Canon, though. My TS-E 17mm needed a replacement knob and retaining screw a few years ago and it was only $20 or $30 shipped.

Did Canon verify the part number you need? I wonder if they may have quoted you a price for a different part or for the whole tilt assembly rather than just the knob?

the title of this thread is "Canon part cost is outrageous!"

Unclear what you're trying to tell us but thank you for your input.
