New firmware for Nikon Z9 (V5.31)
Fixed an issue where the focus point would sometimes leave the subject immediately after tracking started when [AF-area mode] was set to [3D-tracking] in photo mode or to [Subject-tracking AF] in video mode.
Video Recording
Extended the maximum length of footage that can be recorded in a single video session.
Brightness information, including histogram and wave-form monitor, now displays a warning indicator on the brighter side that shows potential loss of detail in highlights when [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] is selected for [Video file type].
You can now also set [Video file type] to [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] in [Auto] mode. Note that the shooting mode [M] will automatically be selected.
Added a [Video file naming] item. File names consist of a reel number, clip number, recording date, among other information.
Added [LTC signal input] to [Timecode]. Now the timecode can be synchronized with a timecode generator connected to the external microphone/line input connector.
■ Controls
Increased the maximum number of files displayed to import from g15 [LUT view assist settings] > [Import CUBE file] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] to 50. CUBE files with names starting with a period (“.”) are no longer displayed.
■ Displays
Added a [Power-on lamp energy saver] item to the [SETUP MENU]. The power-on lamp remains lit while the camera is turned on when [OFF] is selected.
■ Network
Updated some guidance texts displayed on the camera when connecting to the Nikon Imaging Cloud service (the connection procedure itself remains unchanged).
■ Other Changes
Fixed an issue where noise sometimes occurred in the audio during live streaming (USB streaming).

No fix for the Zr H265 softness issues.
Nikon never publicly acknowledged the issue, there won’t be a “we fixed” announcement. The fix will quietly land via a firmware update with vague wording such as improved stability.

Hmm... I think I ran into the issue this Z9 firmware is said to fix. I did upgrade to 5.30 a few days ago.
Let's just hope they didn't slip in a few "undocumented features" into this update too, like disabling Viltrox lenses in light of their litigation against Viltrox.

I'd gladly pay an "upgrade fee" to add pre capture RAW to my Z9. For me, that's the only thing missing at this point, for m eanyway.
This has been discussed at length, but it's not going to happen. The Z9 and Z8 accomplish pre-capture by pulling JPGs from a video data pipeline. They weren't coded/designed to be able to pull RAWs from that pipeline and there's probably too much involved in rewriting the code (or possibly even a hardware barrier). If it could be reasonably accomplished it would already have been added to both cameras.

Updated my Z9 yesterday. My Viltrox 35mm f1.2 works the same as before the update.

I feel that 5.31 has eliminated some nervousness of the AF system that existed well before 5.30. It builds on what was delivered in 5.30 and together they represent noticeable progress.

Thanks.
I couldn't update anyway because 58% battery charge is apparently the same as a flat battery as far as the camera is concerned, so it wouldn't start updating. Oh well, another time.
