So many frequent and good BIF shooters here. Can any of you say what you've settled on or learned about IS options for BIF, and whether your preferred choice differs from what you might use in, say, ProCap mode when waiting for a perched bird to take flight?

Jack I started using S-IS 1 on the OM-1 after some users with more time than me compared S-IS Auto and were getting more sharp images with S-IS 1. I have carried that onward to the OM1-2. I have no idea if that should still be the case to use or not as newer camera it may not matter. I guess I'll use S-IS 1 until somebody says otherwise. S-IS 1 is used in ProCap also.

Same thing could be said for the setting Frame Rate. On the previous cameras, M1x and OM1 it was tested by people with more time and inquire that more sharper images with Frame Rate set to "Normal" than at "High". If I remember that the EVF could not keep up with the display rate and slowed down the camera. So I used "Normal" But on the OM1-2 there has not been mention to keep using "Normal" and I have it set to "High" thinking with the new processor system it does not matter any more. I don't know which setting is better.

We tend to carry forward settings to new cameras without knowing with the upgrades is it necessary to do that

Thank you, Patrick. I really appreciate your making time to help.

What has me wondering about IS for BIF is the manual saying of S-IS2: “Image stabilization applies to vertical motion. Use when panning the camera horizontally.” On S-IS Auto it says, “Image stabilization applies to motion on all axes. If panning is detected, the camera will automatically suspend image stabilization on that axis.”

Given that it would take an instant settings change (separate C mode?) to jump out of shooting perched or floating birds in S-IS Auto or S-IS1 (“Image stabilization applies to motion on all axes”), is the camera slow or erratic enough detecting panning in S-IS Auto to justify a setup that separates IS modes?

Are experienced BIF shooters jumping back and forth between IS modes? Does that yield significantly better results than simply letting the camera auto-switch into horizontal panning IS? Or just staying in S-IS1? Are BIF shooters ever using S-IS3 (“Use when panning the camera vertically.”)?

You’re getting great shots with S-IS1. Yesterday I tried S-IS Auto, and it mostly locked onto horizontal panning shots. So maybe I’m overthinking this?

You also raise an interesting point about frame rate. Yesterday I kept it on High figuring that’s what pairs best with 25 or more fps. I didn’t notice any EVF lag, but will pay closer attention next time.

Thanks again, Patrick. Happy trails to you and Carol.
