p.1 #1 · Recommend body for Mamiya sekor c 80mm f1.9?
Hi - I didn’t see a medium format section so posted here which might be the closest thing
I current am in the Nikon z system. I would like to try out the mamiya 80mm f1.9 - could you suggest a camera body ideally digital with or without inverted teleconverter to go with it?
I’m really not familiar with medium format or vintage lenses, but I’m determined to try out this lens, so need some advice.

As far as I know there are no digital medium format bodies that accept Mamiya lenses natively. But there are simple adapters to mount Mamiya 645 lenses on Nikon Z bodies. Manual focus of course. Or use a Fuji Gfx body with adapter and they probably exist for Hasselbad as well.

Only way to use it with a Fuji camera is with an adapter. They are not teleconverters as they have no internal lens elements. They are basically just hollow tubes that permit the Mamiya lens to attach to the Fuji G or X mount. You'll want to use a G mount camera to get results more consistent with how the lens was designed to be used.

Seems a bit odd to buy a medium format camera for one specific lens, that isn't very special anyway, no? It's quite hazy wide open but very sharp at f/2.8. But then many other f/2.8 lenses are at least as good and come in whatever focal length you want.

Reading the post again, guessing the term "inverted teleconverter" is referring to a focal reducer. Kipon makes focal reducer adapters for Mamiya to various bodies but I've not used them. I use Contax 645 with a Fringer adapter on Gfx without a focal reducer with results I like.

Yep and since he doesn't want to use those the best way to get most out of the lens is not putting it on a 44x33 sensor camera, but rather look for an old Phase One with 645-sized digital back. But it's a significant investment (2-3k-ish) just to use this one lens. Imo might be better to go for a used GFX and the Mitakon 65mm f1.4, which gives the equivalent focal length and aperture on 44x33.

With very different character and performance, however.
------
Depending on budget and what OP wants, you could argue that it's wiser to get a used GFX 50R or S, and a GF 55/1.7 or 80/1.7, than adapting an old, cheap lens on a newer and more expensive body.
Getting into digital medium format for using the Mamiya 80/1.9 makes very little sense, as it's outperformed by a ton of cheapish 50/1.4 lenses for FF. Unless you are specifically seeking that "look" of course.

Yep. Since he uses Nikon Z too, I think a used copy of the 50mm f1.2 S might be wiser still.
