If you set an R5 up right there's no issue with batteries. You couldn't pay me to go back to using my old 5DIV again as there's just too many advantages and features you are missing with the old DSLR's.
What are your tips for settings for long battery life?

Battery life isn't one of them.
Not even close. The IS alone will kill it fast. No camera is perfect. Rant over.

What lenses are you using? I don't do well with the RF 200-800mm.
R5 II and 100-500 on that day. I have a screenshot of the camera back but no way to post it online anymore.
I could not get any resolution out of the 200-800 I tried. I'm not sure if it was a bad copy or what, but I don't have any data.

Moving from a 1DXIII to an R5 in a water housing presented some challenges for me with the battery as I had to make the R5 battery last at least 4hrs of shooting before I came in for lunch. I've discussed it here previously, but I set it up to shut† down almost instantly and this solved my problem in the water housing. There are settings there that can make it go to sleep within seconds. I played around with them and the EVF/LCD settings and got it dialed in. You then just have to wake up the camera when the next wave is coming and it works fine and keeps the heat down inside the housing.

Coming from a 1DX to an R5 you will notice the battery life. Coming from the 5D series you won't notice it unless you are doing major chimping or similar, or have your LCD on all the time, or don't put the camera to sleep, etc.
