Has anyone sold/traded in a Canon EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens to replace it with a Canon RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens?
Have you been happy with the RF version?
Did you find the additional 100mm range to be advantageous?
Other then the additional 100mm focal range, what other advantages (or disadvantages) would I see?
Would I experience better/faster/more accurate auto focus?
This would be used on an R5 for now. R5 II perhaps down the road.
Any insight, positive or negative, would be appreciated.
Thanks.
IQ wise, 100-400 II & 100-500 were pretty comparable. 100-400 had a few advantages:
1) you can get 200-800 full range; 100-500 w/ 2x is limited to upper range only
2) you can put in a drop in filter in the adapter and get polarizer function
But the portablity and ergonmics of 100-500 won the day. Zero regrets and would do it all over again.

I went from shooting aviation (and everything else) with the EF100-400 II on a 1DX to shooting with the RF100-500 on an R5II. The 1DX was and is a gem of a camera, and I loved the image quality out of it. The EF100-400 II was also a gem of a lens. But the detail I get out of the RF100-500 on the R5II is beyond anything I ever captured on the 1DX. There was a smoothness to the 1DX images that I still miss, but I would not go back.
