p.1 #1 · Snow leopard, Spitti valley, India

I had a great week in Spitti Valley, about 4000m elevation -10 to -20c temperature and great weather all week otherwise.

I was shooting Z9 with 600/4s TC with teleconverter x2 and often with internal TC engaged as well.
Typical distance in Spitti is at least 300-400m or longer usually as you photograph snow leopard across a large ravine.

Thank you. We were very lucky on this trip and have opportunities to see them at long distance and on a couple of days, relatively close distance by Spiti standard.

Thank you. We spent one day with a mother and a cup and another day with mother and 2 cubs but at very long distance.
I did take some video clips of the two cubs playing which was very cute but at a long long distance.

Thanks Morris. Last shot was from the last series of shots on our very last day as the snow leopard walked away and disappeared behind a ridge. Great way to end our trip.

Thanks for sharing these beauties. I like the shots where the animal's camo makes it hard to pick out.

These are awesome! I was in Ladakh for 3 months in 2001 and went to Spiti for a week but it was summer. A few of the pony men I traveled with talked of seeing Snow Leopard. That winter was the time to look.
Having worked as a wildlife biologist I am envious. Great photos. I would never post to this forum as all the work is way above my paygrade but just had to this one time! Thank you!

Ladakh also have pretty decent number of snow leopards in the winter time, even more than Spiti but over much larger area, I was told. Spiti sighting rate is quite high. I spent 6 days there and saw total of 7 different snow leopards as they come down here every year between December and March. February-March is probably the best time to see them though.

Thanks. This is my second trip to Spiti but much much more productive on this trip.
Now that Spiti is becoming increasingly popular, accomodation during the last 2 years are much much improved.
I had to do homestay 2 years ago with no running water, dry shared toilet, very basic food. Now there are several
new hotels with running hot water, electric blanket and food is much much improved making staying at 3500-4000 meters
and -20c temperature much more bearable
