On a recent trip to the desert I went to Arches National Park at night to capture some astrophotography. When I arrived at the Windows area I was surprised how many other people were there doing the same thing! I almost left, but after a few minutes watching the glowing red headlamps near the arch I decided to try and incorporate that and in the end the other photographers helped me light paint the arch. I stayed a bit back and captured the scene from a distance. This was my favorite composition from North Window Arch.

Always amazes me how many stars become visible when you get well off the beaten path, Scott!

You're so right Douglas, and the canyons of Utah are a such good place to shoot the night sky! I did notice that over toward Moab the light pollution is starting to become really noticeable. It used to be a small little town but now it's becoming a little metropolis.
Thanks for the comment CA_Fstop! It was fun being out there and after this headed over to Turret Arch and got a couple interesting ones over there which I may share. Still working on editing those and others from this trip.
A really fine astro photo Scott!
One can see how vast the cosmos is here! The "red" REALLY accents the frame and gives the viewer a sense of the scale and depth of our universe!
Well done brother!

Thanks brother! That means a lot! That contrast between the red-lit arch and the stars was exactly what drew me in. Standing out there, you really feel how small we are in the best possible way. In hindsight, since I was with my daughter, I think it would have been cool to have her walk up and down the path to the right of the frame with her red headlamp on to create some light trails leading up to the arch.

Well you have an "excuse" to back Scott!
I use to go to "star parties" when I was an astronomer(hobbyist) and took astro images also. Those were the dayze of ccd photographic devices for astro images. Relics in today's world!
The weather is getting nice and make sure you do NOT go on a very warm clear night. The heat radiating will rise into the atmosphere and cause "waves" in the camera image. Actually the collder the better.
But I don't know what gorgeous Colorado nights are like in the Spring-Summer.
Good luck!

Great shot Scott! Nice combination of colors - red and blue. Great sky! I see about 5 to 7 stars where I am and some of them may be planets :-)

Thanks a lot Jacob! Those desert skies really deliver, especially on a moonless night like this!

Headed back in a couple weeks Dan, hopefully I can get another stab at it!
