Good luck carrying your Leica camera around Chicago. I hope that city figures itself out, because I wouldn’t be caught carrying my expensive camera gear around that town. An amazing city ruined by violence.
I want to join in and say I was in Chicago just last summer walking all over the city with my gear out either in hand or on my body with never an issue. Beautiful city, one of my favorite trips hotel was right on the pier. If you're scared get some insurance tbh.
Tamarkin will do fine. They have built up a transgenerational customer base and will for sure be more entrepreneurial (if you know Dan you know this to be true) the the Corporate Leica Store. Especially in the vintage Leica area.

Even when crime has been high in Chicago it is in areas that I guarantee the average FM poster isn’t going to come within 5 miles of. I have visited Chicago several times yearly for the last decade+ and have never once felt threatened or unsafe with my camera slung over my shoulder. One of the best, most beautiful cities in the country, and only NYC has more on offer for the photographer on foot IMO.
