Have they solved the problem of the Standalone GPS (Standalone being non networked, not standalone as not a Canon product attached to the camera) losing ephemeris and taking forever to re lock?

I had an S100 point and shoot (and a 7D2) and my biggest complaint was that it took ages to re lock to the sky. When you're travelling you're often shoving the camera into a bag or taking a bus/train/plane to another location and it takes forever. I thought more recent models may have got an assist from a phone, but if you need that, then you might as

Pretty sure even phones have trouble with location if they don't have a cell signal. Haven't tested this recently though.

Getting a satellite lock with anything moving that doesn't have a decently-sized dedicated antenna with a view of the sky is problematic.

Which is why I'd prefer for the camera to get its geolocation from the phone, and provide orientation (which will necessarily differ from the phone) on its own.

This was a major issue on my 6D. I was used to leaving cameras on and letting them sleep - then pulling them out months later and being able to start firing off immediately.

The GPS doesn't really 'sleep' on the 6D. The battery will be stone cold dead.

Further, when you're used to filling up a handful of memory cards, GPS drain definitely limits shooting time - and the worst part is that the actual geolocations provided weren't that good. Like maybe in the right city, but not the precision we're used to with cellphones.

I did not have issues with the 5D IV, but did not leave the battery in it for long periods. When I use a camera, I use it a lot and go through 1-3 batteries every day.

You can set a Favorite Menu item to access the GPS settings quickly and turn it off before putting the camera away.
On the R5/II and R7 I keep the camera in airplane mode always since there is no GPS.

For whatever reason, even my phone doesn't geotag precisely. I can walk around with Google maps set to satellite view and the dot will follow me accurately. Then I take a few pictures and when I look at the location in Lightroom, they're all over the place. This is on the phone itself, but the coordinates attached to my R6 files through the Canon app suffer from the same issue. It's like Google Maps is averaging the GPS signals over a short period to triangulate my position more accurately, but the coordinates attached to a photo are an instantaneous reading which might be 100' to the NW one second and 22' to the S the next.

I know nothing about video, but need to learn. Is this any better than the R5 II for video? For YouTube and internet use is there much difference?

The R5II is a capable platform on which to learn and do video in addition to your stills requirements, where it certainly outperforms the R6III variants. The 'V' cameras offer video-centric interface refinements for those who prioritize video over stills.

And, notably, also delete features that may be more useful for stills.

Really they're the middle of the stills <-> video <-> cinema spectrum that Canon has built out.

I tried both, in the end I rather prefer the GP-E2 which blocks the hot shoe to the smartphone solution, since the GP-E2 is just more reliable even with it's all-over-the place results.

The camera and smartphone was losing a link way too often, either not recording any location, or at noon used a single location from the morning. The phone or camera will not detect a broken link and won't signal anything. Also it had some very weird location errors, ranging from 10 to 800 km off position, and funnily enough, always to the north, showing that there's perhaps some bug in the transfer/protocol.

These days, I'd only use the smartphone method if I wanted to use a hot shoe or if I forgot to bring GP-E2.

Also the smartphone link uses Bluetooth which is big battery drain.

And last but not least, I'm surprised nobody at Canon came up with a smaller GP-E2 that doesn't require an external battery, for the new hot shoe...

I just watched a review of the R6V on Petalpixel, Interesting review. Thinking the lens might be better than the camera for me..
