p.1 #1 · BG-R10 vs BG-R20 Grip on R5 MkII

Just picked up a R5 MkII to replace my R5C which has a BG-R10 battery grip. How much functionally different is the BG-R10 vs the BG-R20 with a R5 MkII? Debating whether to just use the R10 grip for now and then eventually get a R20 grip or just spend the $ for the R20 now. Note that I likely would not shell out the extra for a BG-R20EP.

Bit of a backgrounder - I do mainly stills and very little video. My primary camera is an R5 and picked up the R5C for a song so would use that for my second rig & backup but I never liked the extra bulk and different controls on the R5C. Both bodies have the R10 grips and I will likely sell the R5C in a month or so.

I don't believe the older battery grip is compatible with the newer LP-E6P batteries required by the R5 II.

Big difference, design wise, is the placement of the joystick. It's closer to the shutter and a bit more comfortable in my opinion than the R10. If you're using it to adjust your focus a lot, you may appreciate it.

It would be nice if the grips got this additional slide-in again like we had in the past for AAs. But this time, for the large flash LP-EL batteries.

Yeah, the newer LP-E6P batteries aren't compatible with the R10 grip but except for the single new E6P battery I've gotten with the camera, all my batteries are LP-E6NH.

From what I've read, there are only advanced video and network functions that won't work with the R10 grip/E6NH batteries. Unfortunately I'm leaving on a multi-week trip early next week and won't have time to get the new grip or batteries before I go. I won't be doing any video or using wifi on this trip so I'll just use what I have and see how it goes.

FYI, this thread has a summary of battery/grip functionality on the R5 MkII:

the newer LP-E6P batteries work the R10 grip but behave in the R10 grip like E6NH

I tried 3 LP-E6NH in an R5 II on August 20, 2024. They truly suck directly in the R5 II, though I defer to others about the grips.
By the end of that release week I had 4 more LP-E6P. You could hardly find them anywhere in the early days. Now you would not buy "new" old batteries anyways.
