I'm considering getting the new v2 Nikon 70 200. I'm a pixel peeper and want critical sharpness.

How is the 70 200 with the 1.4 TC?

Does it give you better "usable" resolution than cropping?
Does the v2 lens perform any better in this regard?

I've seen conflicting reports on the 70 200 with 1.4 tc.

Z9 with studio lights on tripod wide open.

V1
V2

they're basically the same in all practical purposes in terms of image quality (even at 300%) and both are plenty sharp, in my opinion. TCs were not usable for me on the F-mount 70-200 Nikon too much CA even on the low MP D700.

Thank you so much for using you time to give me exactly the answer I was looking for. Greatly appreciate it!

This shows me that with a good copy of the v1 lens and 1.4 teleconverter, I can expect great results, even on a high resolution body.
Also, no need to get the v2 if I'm only considering image quality.

I cannot think of any 70-200/2.8 that is not better with 1.4x TC than cropping. The latest of course are easily producing high IQ with a 1.4x.

Definitely nothing wrong with the Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S I with the 1.4x TC.

I’m considering the TC 2.0, anyone here have much experience? I am considering a smaller kit (then lugging a 400mm TC around Yellowstone this year with my seven young children).

The 2x TC works quite well, but you need to stop down from wide open for best results. At f8 it is actually very good.

Z7II + Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S I + 2x TC, 1/80s f/8.0 at 330.0mm iso720

Z7II + Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S I + 2x TC, 1/80s f/7.1 at 400.0mm iso3200

Z7 + Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S I + 2x TC, 1/80s f/8.0 at 400.0mm iso320

100% crop of above
