Nice work, Lance, with both your photos and your site!

I'm in a similar situation (your quote below). One of these days I'm hoping to come up with a clear plan for my site and be able to dedicate some serious time to putting that plan into action. Of course I've been saying that for years!

But for now, here's mine:

Those are great, I wouldn't have thought of black and white for an airshow but really like that effect

Those are great. I tried to do food photography once years ago for the Denver Kidney Foundation cookbook they were putting together and didn't realize how much of an artistic eye you need. That reuben looks amazing!

Be careful an about those teaser prices. I don’t know abot the services you mention, but if your site gets much traffic the basic services won’t cut it.

If one’s needs are pretty basic and/or you are just trying to “get your feet wet” with a web site, I recommend one of the free wordpress.com sites.

That’s the trick — open THOSE new links to a new (or “new,” to use the word you add in the ink) page. Be a little cautious about this, as some viewers don’t like it when a page ends up opening a ton of new tabs. (There is a different link construction taht allows you to open them in a named tab, IIRC. Haven’t used it for awhile…)

(On the subject of sending people off you site, one of the early web figures — arguably the inventor of the weblog — used to write that by sending people off you site you can become more popular. I know that sounds weird, and it won’t work for everyone’s purposes, but his idea was that you can establish yourself as a sort of reliable curator of interesting stuff on the web, and that this attracts followers. I think it is less true of websites today than i was back then — around 2000 — but it remains true in the social media world.)

Websites, like books, can have very different purposes and be targeted at quite different audiences — as we see in this thread.

If I'm wrong I'll be corrected. But considering unmetered bandwidth, I'd be surprised if anyone posting in this thread needs more. Heck, most of us are probably still using unpaid DNS hosting bundled with name registration.

I’m reconsidering my main commercial website, which is:

And I also have a more regional website, which serves its purpose well:

You are correct that it may be sufficient for some with very low bandwidth sites. (Though the companies will typically try to upsell you after a few months.)

I definitely needed more, and I know I’m not alone.

To put your advice and mine together in a way that might be useful, it can make sense to start out with one of the low cost options (that’s what I did many yeas ago), but also best perhaps to go with a starter plan from a reliable hosting company with a good record even if it costs a little bit more.

I still think that the wordpress option can be a great way for folks who want to start with a simple low-traffic site at first. The pricing is as low as free, and it is easy to grow when/if your needs increase. Wordpress sites are also optimized for users who want/need to post frequent new content. Most of my wordpress sites are self-hosted with one of two hosting companies, but wordpress itself can handle the hosting and dns stuff, making the process very simple.

Looks good. I am a fan of the not quite black themes. I personally prefer an album-based entry point: new work, personal favorites, and then various categories. Unless you are serious about sales I would remove the purchase link.

p.2 #9 · What's your website

The feedback in this thread is really valuable and I also greatly appreciate seeing the websites of other people on this forum.

I am not a professional photographer, but a hobbyist. My website is more of a personal project and place where I can share some of my favorite images. I do have a store, which connects to Pixels.com. While I know that they are not as good as the higher-end print shops, I don't really get enough sales to warrant the monthly fees to have auto fulfillment through them, or to set my site up to deal with shipping, taxes, payments, etc.

I do have another, older Wordpress site which will go away in January of 2027. I got really sick of dealing with Wordpress and decided to go with a website builder for photographers (Portfoliobox) and that was a fantastic option for what I want out of the site. It is a little more expensive, but not having to deal with all of the back-end stuff makes it totally worth it for me. The switch also gave me a nice opportunity to re-consider the site structure and content.

I do have a blog on my new site as well, but rarely ever post to it. A few entries were ported over from my old site. Blogging is definitely not the main goal, but nice to have when I feel like adding a post.

Mine is a simple, hand coded, HTML website that has been online since 1999. It has never cost more than $11/month to host. By current standards it's clunky and unpolished, but it works.

Today it is just a convenient photo album for myself and to share with friends and family. I generally post a photo every week when I'm around. Most are newly captured, but I sometimes post something dug up from archives of digital images and film scans going back to the 1970s that has never been processed before.

Piwigo is a very viable free option. If you are comfortable with hand coding CSS this should be a very low threshold. It comes with a number of free themes that don't suck, and allows you to attach tag, associate photos with multiple albums, bulk manipulation, etc. Most providers that allow self-coding enable it through cPanel

My website runs on it, and it is plenty good enough for enthusiast use

Heh. I started hand-coding websites in 1995, but I moved to content managed sites in the early 2000s. (You still have to deal with some code if you want to customize things, of course.)

It is really weird to think that I’ve done this for a bit more than three decades!

Yes, I agree, about website being like books when used well, and also the multiple tabs' aspect of the function. I've seen sites totally overdo this, causing me some mental whiplash. It didn't encourage me to return, and sure didn't use it when I used to design other people's websites many years ago, pre-2005 (I'm a designer, but quit websites many years ago).

I definitely remember those old days of 2000s, and I think there is some validity in what that person said, about one becoming more popular using off-site links. If it's useful information the viewer wants or needs, they will return, and even pass the info to other like-minded people.

The advantage in my case, and why I decided to do it, was the realization that the IMDb profile is an extension of me and my work anyway. The profile adds to the 'legitimacy' of being in the industry (not the general 'fan' page profile), the projects I've worked on and what I do since it's the 'industry source' and everyone looks there, even fans of the productions. The filmmakers/producers add my name to the cast/crew there; I don't do it.

Since my work serves this purpose too, some of my film/TV stills are used over there for the specific productions, in slide shows. Some people can follow me there too.

Another interesting thing I was told by a few industry people who found me...
They reviewed my profile after clicking on a production, reviewing cast/crew, seeing my name listed, and THEN visiting my site from there (my link is there too), before considering adding me to their crew roster. Crazy. So, it can actually work in both directions.

Also on the credits page on my site, right next to the IMDb logo/link, there's also a direct link to download a PDF of my full 'CV & Gear List'. It's a nice combination and saves a lot of emailing when vying for more work.

Wow, you were NOT lying. I was trying to zoom in on all that amazing food! Beautiful work! Very inspiring as well.

When you travel to do your work, does the client hire the stylist themselves, or do you have one/a few you work with exclusively?

I tried my hand at 'food' photography, but the most I've tried is a whole pineapple, and the ol' 'frosty, sweaty glass of beverage with the fake ice...'.

I may explore it just for fun when I have more time, in retirement, when I eventually move overseas.

Thank you for sharing.

I appreciate your comments, it's been about twenty years since I transitioned from Fashion/Lifestyle to the Food genre. I mainly work with one or two Food Stylists and I'll coordinate with clients for the appropriate person. As I say, the most important member of the crew is the Food Stylist, they can make or break a shoot and worth their weight in gold. My advice is to try and tell a story with your images, who is your audience and it doesn't have to be perfect, the crumbs are an important element.

Well, I have several and now that I retired, I spend most of my time coding and enhancing.

I originally created rangefinderforum.com decades ago It has really evolved over the years. Now I focus on the following

https://www.nikonimages.com

https://www.50mil.com

https://www.leicaimages.com

https://www.purerangefinder.com

https://www.zeissimages.com

all the same code just a niche for each. Strictly photos no forum stuff other than posting on the messageboard.

The ones im trying to get going now are 50mil.com and purerangefinder.com It's personal 50 is my favorite focal length and rf cameras are my favorite cameras.

It can be weird, great, or depressing, depending on the context. Sometimes all three at once.

I was taking pictures as a kid, long before the Internet existed. My first website used a provider called "tripod.com". I'm guessing that was sometime between 1995 and 1997. I believe you could have your own domain name and pay for hosting, or they'd host a more limited site as a subdomain of their own for "free". That's what I did. In the latter case you had to put up with pop-up ads. They were small by today's standards, but still obnoxious. Interestingly, Ethan Zukerman, the inventor of the pop-up ad, worked there at the time.

After playing with that for a couple years I got a domain name and moved the code to a real hosting service, and several others since then.

Of course everything has changed. Per Google, in 1995 less than 1% of the world population had Internet access, and there were approximately 23,500 websites in the world. There were also around 2.3 billion fewer people. All of that is indeed very weird to think about now.
