That’s the trick — open THOSE new links to a new (or “new,” to use the word you add in the ink) page. Be a little cautious about this, as some viewers don’t like it when a page ends up opening a ton of new tabs. (There is a different link construction taht allows you to open them in a named tab, IIRC. Haven’t used it for awhile…)
(On the subject of sending people off you site, one of the early web figures — arguably the inventor of the weblog — used to write that by sending people off you site you can become more popular. I know that sounds weird, and it won’t work for everyone’s purposes, but his idea was that you can establish yourself as a sort of reliable curator of interesting stuff on the web, and that this attracts followers. I think it is less true of websites today than i was back then — around 2000 — but it remains true in the social media world.)

Websites, like books, can have very different purposes and be targeted at quite different audiences — as we see in this thread. ...Show more →
Yes, I agree, about website being like books when used well, and also the multiple tabs' aspect of the function. I've seen sites totally overdo this, causing me some mental whiplash. It didn't encourage me to return, and sure didn't use it when I used to design other people's websites many years ago, pre-2005 (I'm a designer, but quit websites many years ago).
I definitely remember those old days of 2000s, and I think there is some validity in what that person said, about one becoming more popular using off-site links. If it's useful information the viewer wants or needs, they will return, and even pass the info to other like-minded people.
The advantage in my case, and why I decided to do it, was the realization that the IMDb profile is an extension of me and my work anyway. The profile adds to the 'legitimacy' of being in the industry (not the general 'fan' page profile), the projects I've worked on and what I do since it's the 'industry source' and everyone looks there, even fans of the productions. The filmmakers/producers add my name to the cast/crew there; I don't do it.
Since my work serves this purpose too, some of my film/TV stills are used over there for the specific productions, in slide shows. Some people can follow me there too.
Another interesting thing I was told by a few industry people who found me...
They reviewed my profile after clicking on a production, reviewing cast/crew, seeing my name listed, and THEN visiting my site from there (my link is there too), before considering adding me to their crew roster. Crazy. So, it can actually work in both directions.
Also on the credits page on my site, right next to the IMDb logo/link, there's also a direct link to download a PDF of my full 'CV & Gear List'. It's a nice combination and saves a lot of emailing when vying for more work.
