Yup, bad times are coming. I had a Nikkor 35/1.8 G take a swim into a river with a D700. Despite being gasketed and not having any visible water inside the rear of the lens/mirrorbox of the camera, some moisture did make it's way inside and the lens was progressively worse over the next few months. almost certainly was corroded and basically a writeoff.
If you are a member of Nikon Professional services, give them a call and see if they'll work on this lens. If so, you can buy it, then send it directly to Nikon Professional Services and based on your membership level, they may be able to disassemble the camera and get rid of the possible fungus for free or a charge.
I have a gold membership to Canon Professional Services and before I buy something pre-owned I run it by CPS to see if it's something that they work on and if so that'll buy it and send it to them to make for sure that everything works properly.
I once bought a Canon camera body from from MPB. I tried to register it on Canon Professional Services. During the registration process and would not accept the serial number.
I called and talked to an analyst who told me that that serial number belongs to a gray market Canon product and they would not be able to service it.
I initiated an RMA with MPB and explain the situation. They didn't have any problem with me exchanging that camera body for a different one.
They credited my VISA the difference. They sent me a shipping label. I sent the original camera back. I got the replacement. No issues.
I logged back into Canon Professional Services and was able to register this camera body without issue.
With my membership level, I repackaged a camera body, sent it to Canada Professional Services for an 18-point maintenance which is free at my membership level.
If there were any issues with the camera they would have notified me and explained to me what the issues were and how much repair would cost.
Membership does have its privileges with both Nikon Professional Services and Canon Professional Services.
While I'm not sure I agree with their condition being listed as "Excellent", I do appreciate them at least listing it. I ran into a few lenses on their site that were labeled exactly like this and passed on them due to potential future issues that the moisture could cause. Could just be me being paranoid, as I've never actually had a lens that ever had visible moisture (as far as I'm aware), but I'm not sure I'd be willing to drop $1.5k+ to find out.
