I keep hearing people say you can't assign a button to toggle pre-capture on/off on the R5II? There is a workaround to do this:
1. Assign the M-Fn button to toggle between custom modes ("C" icon)
2. Turn on Restrict shooting modes and disable C2 and C3, assigning only C1 with a check mark
3. Make sure Auto update settings is enabled
4. Go to M mode, setup your desired shooting settings and enable pre-capture
5. Register these settings to C1
Now you can use the M-Fn button to toggle between your current shooting mode and C1m with pre-capture enabled. If you use utilize C2 and C3, you can leave those enabled as well but you'll have to toggle through all of them to get back to your desired shooting mode. I don't use pre-capture, but I keep seeing this topic being brought up so I figured some of you might want to know.
Now, if you could only return the favor and tell me how to assign M-Fn to toggle between photo and video mode like the R5 did....oh wait, I already brought this to Canon engineers attention on day one and they realized they really FUBAR'd this on the R5II, making it a worse hybrid camera than the R5 for quickly and silently switching between modes, and now requiring a 3rd hand to do so, or requiring you to remove your hand from the controls. I've spoken to them about this a few times now asking for updates, and said they would put it on the list for firmware updates, but I'm still waiting a year and a half later. I don't keep up with all firmware updates, but if anyone ever sees this fix released, please let me know.
Why do we have only three C modes, anyway? It's not like it's a physical click on the mode dial anymore. And why can't we name them? I'm constantly finding myself needing at least five, depending on the trip that I'm on. This whole C1, C2, C3 is so 2008.

My biggest complaint by far is this. I also wish you could also set multiple custom settings per lens, since it would be so convenient to have custom settings for a bare lens, and then custom settings for each teleconverter.

I'm with you on this one. I now need 6 custom modes minimum for video with M to give us 7 slots, but right now we only have 3 + M to give us 4 slots. But it would be nice if they gave us C1-C7 with M as an 8th slot:
And as you mentioned, we should be able to rename them within a given set amount of characters. In my case, I would just name them as is:
4k24
4k30
4k60
4k120
2k240
8k24
8k60
And finally, the stills settings should not carry over into video like they do now. For example, if I restrict shooting modes in stills mode, this should not carry over into my video mode like it does now. Canon really needs to get the software sorted out on the next generation.

This works on the R1 as well. Thanks for posting.
If you are a hybrid shooter you will have to avoid restricting shooting modes though, at least with the R5II. Because if I wanted to use the workaround as a simple toggle like I described above, I would restrict the other two custom shooting modes. And then, when I switch over to video mode, 2 of my key custom video modes are not available. Which is really lame that it carries over.
I don't have an R1 in front of me, but if you restrict a shooting mode in stills mode does it also carry over into video mode as well?
