p.1 #1 · Considering EF-M 11β22 - seeing more failure reports than usual
I am usually a Sony shooter, but I have kept the M system mainly for the 22/32mm; the combination is lovely and still hard to replace in terms of size/quality.
I saw a sale post on FB Marketplace for 11-22mm, and I am tempted to pick it up, but I am seeing quite a few failure/error reports across forums, more than with any other M lenses. For example, the 1855 and 32mm seem to have a much better track record. Some of the posts mention:
- lens not detected / camera not powering on with the lens attached
- communication errors (often reported as Error 06)
- clicking or buzzing on startup
- aperture-related issues or the lens just becoming unresponsive
Another common thing I noticed in many of these reports was that the lens was not used much, and when brought back into use after a while, it failed. That is actually similar to my pattern, occasional shooting, multiple systems, and the lens may spend more time on the shelf.
At the same time, I am really tempted due to the size for a casual walk-around ultra-wide, especially compared to the Sony 1635 GM I use.
Would love to hear from long-term users, and also those with similar occasional use patterns.

I've been using mine since I bought it new, in 2017. It's been on trips to Portugal, Italy, Ontario, and Utah. I've been using it quite a lot in the studio, for the last couple of years (and other EF-M stuff), because their small size and articulating screens, lets me use them in places where I have to fire up a remote display, for my larger, FF DSLR.
p.1 #8 · Considering EF-M 11β22 - seeing more failure reports than usual
The EF-M 11-22mm is the first Canon EF-series lens that is retractable, with an inner polycarbonate barrel that can be retracted for compact travel/storage, or extended into shooting position. If the lens is in the retracted position and you attempt to use the camera, a reminder to extend the lens is displayed.
Extending the lens into shooting position requires pushing the switch forward and rotating the zoom ring approximately 40° to reach the 11mm mark. The inner barrel extends approximately 0.6" (16mm) from the storage position to the shooting position. The lens locks in the shooting position, so the lens retraction switch must be pushed forward to retract the barrel into the storage position.

Thanks, here is one more concern. The seller describes,
"You need to "unlock" it to take a picture because the camera won't start if the lens is fully collapsed"
Is this the case with all 11-22, or is something wrong with this lens?
Indeed as the previous poster indicates, this is perfectly normal. Similar to the EFM 15-45, it is a space-saving feature. Of course nobody forces you to collapse the lens; you can keep it non-retracted all the time, though it seems less vulnerable during transport when retracted.
