This was yesterday morning at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. There was light fog yet the light was already turning harsh. All of this happened while they were also attending to their nest in a nearby nest box.

That's a excellent question. I'm shooting from a board walk over the marsh and the nest boxes and perches are 20 or more feet from the walk. I observe the perches they enjoy and then set up my tripod at a distance I've learned they will tolerate me if I'm not moving. Then I simply wate. It is very important to stay relaxed and to move slowly if at all to avoid scaring them.
