______

The new Sony a7R VI pushes the R-series into territory that used to require two separate cameras. It combines a new 66.8MP full frame stacked CMOS sensor with up to 30 fps continuous shooting, much faster readout speeds, improved rolling shutter performance, and far more advanced AI-based autofocus. Sony is clearly trying to make this a true hybrid body instead of just a high resolution landscape or studio camera. Compared to previous a7R models, the biggest story is speed. The stacked sensor design changes the entire feel of the camera, especially for wildlife, sports, or event shooting where older high megapixel bodies often struggled. Dynamic range is rated at up to 16 stops, ISO ranges from 100 to 32000 natively, and the updated stabilization system is now rated up to 8.5 stops in the center of the frame. Pixel Shift mode can also generate composite files approaching 266MP for static subjects.

Autofocus looks like a major leap forward as well. The camera uses a dedicated AI processor with improved subject recognition for humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes. Sony also expanded the Real-time Tracking system so it can better maintain focus on partially obscured or distant subjects. The AF system covers 94% of the frame with 759 phase detect points and works down to -6 EV. Video shooters also get features carried over from Sony cinema bodies, including Focus Map, AF Assist, breathing compensation, S-Cinetone, LUT support, and oversampled 8K and 4K recording modes. 8K goes up to 30p and 4K up to 120p, with internal 10-bit recording and better heat management than previous generations. Sony even added a Dual Gain video mode designed to reduce noise and improve tonal transitions in lower contrast scenes, although it comes with frame rate and ISO limitations.

The body itself has also been refined in practical ways. The EVF is now a very high resolution 9.44 million dot OLED finder with improved brightness and color accuracy, and the rear LCD keeps the excellent hybrid tilt plus flip design introduced on recent Sony bodies. Sony improved weather sealing, grip rigidity, and support for heavier lenses. Connectivity is extensive, including Wi-Fi 6, dual USB-C ports, full size HDMI, wired LAN support, livestreaming features, and optional 32-bit float XLR audio through the new adapter. Overall, this feels less like a traditional “slow but detailed” R-series body and more like Sony trying to merge the strengths of the a1 and a7R lines into one camera. The only real question now is whether the rolling shutter performance truly gets close to flagship sports bodies, because on paper this is one of the most ambitious hybrid cameras Sony has made.

Anyone excited about the possibility of an A7CR II inheriting some of these features, similar to what Sony did when they brought many of the A7RV’s capabilities into the A7CR?

It depends what they do with the EVF and screen!

Well Fred, I'm pretty excited to hear about the features if they prove to be true.

I'm looking seriously at the RVI and thinking that the money I've saved up to add a 400-800mm to my existing 200-600mm might better off going towards upgrading my RV to the RVI instead. I think for birding and action, the faster sensor would allow me to use the E shutter, which I totally ignore right now... plus open up pre-capture and video options that I do not currently have.

It will probably force me to buy some faster memory cards to take full advantage of some of those features to their best use, which I never worried about with the pace I shoot my RV at... plus I'd want to add extra new batteries. Probably only OEM batt's available until the knock offs come along? Either way, it sounds like a solid upgrade for RV owners, not just a dress up, and a good competitor for N's Z8.

Eric

I am definitely more excited about the upcoming A7cR II since it has become my favorite camera. Except for some birding photography activities, which I am doing less and less since my age is getting up there, my most frequently used camera is the A7c R.

That's the price we pay for a pretty much full-featured but compact and light-weight camera. I am perfectly fine with the way the camera is and enjoy the IQ it generates. But I realize to each his/her own...

I hope Sony found a way to further improve the EVF. It has improved since the original A7C, though I get they are somewhat constrained by the compact size of this series. Still, a higher magnification EVF paired with a 3.7MP panel would be a very welcome upgrade.

I originally thought the LCD design would bother me, but since I rarely use the screen anyway, I usually just set the camera up and keep it closed. In that sense, I have actually grown to like the current implementation on the A7CR.

Yes, I am.

Actually, I’ve been considering an A7CR to replace my A7R IV (which I use when I wish to have autofocus or to use lenses for which there is no Leica equivalent, or when it’s useful to have IBIS), in order to have something smaller. So if there’s improved IBIS and dynamic range, that’s certainly of interest to me. But if the sensor readout is as good as it may be, it could also serve as a second body — with superior autofocus — to complement my A1, for wildlife and BIF.

Although I don’t suppose that the A7CR II will materialise for a while?

I'm considering moving on (adding to) from my A7Riv. The better finder on the A7Rv has had me looking to it more than the A7CR. I kind of compare the size and handling of my A6700 when thinking about it, too. And I like the smaller body, can deal with either A7Riv or A6700 finders. would like better, of course.

I think there's a good chance this A&Rvi sensor opportunities could cause a lot of people to drop thinking about an A7CR until the new sensor version arrives.

A bit of an aside, but have A7Cii sales tailed off, maybe due to anticipation of the A7v sensor version?

A7cr AF system already feels like overkill for a compact body that I tend to use with small lenses, so probably not for me. Mainly got the a7cr high mp sensor in a compact body

In Japan A7CII is still selling even better than A7V overall probably because it's priced at a much sweeter spot and Japanese really like compact cameras. If we look at kakaku.com mirrorless camera popularity rankings, A7CII is #1 (body only) and #3 (lens kit) while A7V is #2 (body only) (both rankings are across all mirrorless, not only Sony).

I prefer the bigger body for longer heavier lenses, but if they give us a custom grip like they did with the cR it could work. But this camera seems like it might just be the best new camera in Sony’s shed for animals anyway. At least until they put a global shutter in the A1 successor.

The A7CR is my main camera. I have two of them and I mount each with a different lens for speed in shooting without making a lens change. I most often have the Sigma i series 45/2.8 mounted on one with either the Sigma 24/3.5, the Sigma 65/2.0, or the Sigma 90/2.8 mounted on the other. I am mostly shooting family documentary, or travel, or still lifes and scenes.

If they put in a fast stacked sensor, and improved the EVF a bit, even at a slight increase in size, it would be a perfect camera for me. As Sony's other camera sizes have crept up, the A7Cxx cameras seem nicely smaller and smaller.

Lots of nice improvements!

The jury is still out, of course, but it sure looks promising on paper. Still didn't get a higher res/nicer LCD. Let's hope the EVF works better in AF-C. I do wish they would have gone with the a1 II or a9 III body.

Of course, still no internal RAW or open gate
