Another avenue could be the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS which is heavier and even less bright (but that is not such an issue with the latest RF bodies and progress in RAW noise reduction as mentioned before). You get the extra focal range for birding at the cost of ⅔ of an aperture stop.
The original question states previously using fixed aperture lenses, were these mirror lenses of past? They were comparatively lightweight and low bulk, in exchange for some noticeable comprises in image quality.
