Yea, but you were in the right place at the right time WITH your camera. That means you were serious, and hence deserve the qudos for the great capture.
I really should hit the beach for our summer storms here in Tampa. We're the lightning capitol of the world and yet I still can't find time to get out there and shoot lightning I really wish I could see your shot other than the thumbnail—it's not showing up for me—because it looks like an awesome capture.
Thanks everyone.. I'm very honoured that it was selected as there was a number of great shots which didn't get picked..
This shot was taken after being on the headland for roughly 3 hours watching the storm progress from the land out over the ocean.. This one was about 30 min after sunset. (read as took 300 shots, deleted all but 10)
The shot was 52sec, f/3.5, 10.0mm, iso100 (cropped for aspect)
I opened the shutter & left it till i got the lightning which exposed the shot. By having it open for nearly 1 minute it also allowed the land to be exposed.. (by chance - this was not intended!) If you look closely at the lightning that the 3 strikes vary in focus. This is because i believe the one on the left occured much later in the exposure than the initial 2 strikes on the right..
Simply a case of being at the right place at the right time with my camera.. I didn't expect to get such a good shot (since it was my first attempt @ lightning) Which is why i'm so happy about it..
Lightning is simultaneously easier and more difficult than you think it is. You don't have to click the shutter at the right time, but sometimes you'll overexpose if you have the aperture too open. You might also miss the focus and it'll take you a few times to get it right. With these new digital lenses that don't stop at infinity, it's harder to focus, especially if you don't have a distant point of light. And sometimes you miss a good shot when you're looking at the last one Oh and if you have massive storms that float over you like at my house, you'll have to resist the urge to move the camera when lightning strikes elsewhere. DON'T MOVE IT! You will always regret that.
The last time I shot a lightning storm, one came from behind me as I was shooting!
