I photograph for a number of charitable organizations/non-profits throughout the year and one of my favorite ones is a group called "Hope Restored Mission" in Plano Texas.

Good for you Jim! Give back to your community! I try to do that as often as I can. But, sadly, I have been noticing "walls" preventing "free" photographic services. arise

Not sure what that is about!

Again kudos to you and your giving!

Thanks Dan, I find it very rewarding and it is the least I can do with the gift The Good Lord has Blessed me with. I'm not sure what challenges you are running up against but all my non profits are more than happy to utilize any free, and I mean "free" time that I can devote to them. I jokingly tell them that I am more than happy to do whatever I am able, but that I get up every morning with the clear purpose of not being a non-profit.........................

This is amazing to me. Today the paper I shoot sports photos for posted a 1996 edition at the end of their Saturday Morning on-line edition (30 years ago). I know Jim and I occasionally mention how far photography has advanced. This is a screenshot of a high school basketball article from February, 1996 with a photo...

Great post Ray, an amazing journey for sure! There are so many aspects that have changed in our craft, think about the 1/2 stop dynamic range of a Kodachrome 25 transparency. Compare that to 15.2 stops in the X2DII. The other day I was thinking about wrangling the Sinar P 4x5 inside a business jet, shooting endless Polaroids at $2.00 a shot, loading 4x5 transparencies into the film holders and feeling the notches to make sure the emulsion side is facing out.Refrigerators filled with thousands of dollars worth of film. Heck, just being limited to a 36 exposure roll of film. The countless hours that I had to kill waiting for test strips to be processed at BWC. I'm glad I had all of those experiences, but I have no desire to go back to any of it. A client asked me the other day if I missed "film", would I ever go back to it................ I told him it's like the people who are going back to vinyl records because "they can hear the vinyl". I remember "hearing the vinyl", and antistatic spray and cloths.............no thanks.

How about a 1MP Black and White hybrid camera from Canon/Nikon for $28,000? Man, there were some furious Dudes when the first 3.25 MP Canon was released for $1,600. I'm really surprised the film industry didn't figure out some way to quash the release of the memory card. Who amongst us would be shooting 12,000 exposures at an air show if we were going to have to shell out $30+ bucks for every 36 exposures....................? Yet we wince at paying a couple hundred bucks for a 1TB CF Express card. I used to have $65,000 + in film purchases over the course of a year, double that number with processing. I'm lovin' me some digital!

My wife demanded a lot of Christmas photos. Christmas, around 2001, I sent the film to the Fox kiosk and ended up paying about $400 total for film and processing. I bought her a Canon G2 for her birthday. About $800 for the camera plus extra battery and memory cards. Then I had to buy more hard drives because she was taking digital photos like a 2026 Tik Tok'er! Then on to the 40D.

Speaking about memory prices, have you seen this thread yet?

Jim,
I got a chuckle out of your "hearing the vinyl" comment. Amazing what vinyl costs these days, not to mention a decent record player and the system to go with it. I don't think any of my friends still have a "stereo" as we used to know it. I still have the receiver and speakers I bought 32 years ago, and the record player my father bought in 1975. To me, putting on an old record is about actually sitting down and listening to a whole side of the record without tapping a phone or pushing a button on a remote to skip a track or 5. I still have the albums I bought in high school, some of my mothers, and some of my grandmothers. Certainly something to enjoy while sitting on the couch in front of a nice fire. But it's crazy to spend $40+ on a new whatever gram vinyl record as they seem to sell them now.

I hear ya on the film - between air shows and swim meets and other sports, don't think I ever would have gotten into it like I have.

Good Morning Gero,

Those albums of yours are probably worth a small fortune, aside from the sentimental value. I scrimped and saved in high school for my Marantz set up, can't remember who made my turntable. Remember trying to decide what "needle" you were going to buy, diamond or some other jewel? Wonder what my, now long gone, original set of Beatles albums would be worth today?

My wife has a few, Cream and Tommy are mine. Her father loved the early Beatles and he even took her with him to see them at the Houston Coliseum.

I agree with Gerov,
Its about the process and the experience.

I bought a little amp and some new stereo speakers last year for Christmas.
We have an inexpensive turntable in our "TV room" and have been pulling our vinyl and CD's out of the closet and have been enjoying the occasional evening of music instead of turning on the boob toob.
During the last ice storm I sorted and alphabetized our CD's.

It's been quite nice getting reacquainted with the "album" instead of the "track"

This is the CD's and about a third of our vinyl.

Nice Zane! I had everything Brubeck recorded, lots of Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary. I have no idea where all of that is now, lots loaned out in college and never returned I suppose.

I have a physical coming up this week and just filled out the pre-check in questions...........pretty depressing....."am I able to get my food from my plate to my mouth without assistance?" Another interesting one, which I don't consider to be anyone's business.."Are there guns in my home?" Sure sounds like a bunch of governmental nonsense to me.

And NO! I have not fallen in the past year!!

Please use the gun in my house to shoot me when the answer to the food question is yes................

What do guns have anything to do with annual physical exam?
I agree, i would not waste time to meet the maker if i have to find myself in that situation.

Beautiful tonality in those images! Well done!! I would bet that whoever they hired to cover the show didn't do as good a job as you did in your few shots.

I quit doing physicals because of those questions and the doctor continuously trying to put me on statins. My answer to the fall question was " Yes, I fall all the time. I have been falling since I was able to walk. I am active and I do things and sometimes I take chances. I play sports with my grandchildren and sometimes I fall from tripping on a root or something. In fact, I fall often enough I have learned how to land without breaking any bones."

Nice to see a solid stack of '45s in your collection. That's how I started out. Amazing how much both the creating and experience of listening to music have changed over the last decades. As nice as it is to be able to download a new album, it just isn't the same as going to a record store and perusing the new releases as well as all the other albums and artists...
