It's entirely possible - though the side rubber damage is totally different than in the Nikon's I've owned over the last 10 year. My way of using them hasn't changed much. It's pretty well show in this thread on dpreview - https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4373735 (except for me the whole layer of the rubber bubbled / peeled off that small panel).
As for the damage under the fingernails - it may be because the grip shape is different / body is held in a different way.
I haven't taken any photos of either - my camera got to Nikon today (let's see how long they take to 'estimate'). I hope I won't see the dreaded 'parts hold' status.
