I don’t see having both Z mount and F mount feasible in this kind of focal length. Anything beyond 300mm is $$$ and likely you’ll need a set of TC as well. If you have an f mount and Z mount, you’re spending double to have separate sets of TC.
I see Z9 as the all around camera that can do everything. A Z7(I or II) as a landscape and light action as back up if you want to go light.
As much as I love this 500mm PF, I just can’t see myself owning another set of TC on f mount when I’ll have a set of TC for Z mount on upcoming Z superteles.

I was really just asking about the relative merits of the D500 vs. the Z 50 for use with the 500pf, if anyone has compared those two with the 500pf. That's all.
I have a ton of F mount lenses, and already have the teleconverters, which I don't have any real reason to give up after moving predominantly to the Z 7 as a body. Some people have reasons, I don't. So, it's not a cost issue. (If it's not a cash flow issue, it isn't a cost issue, is how it works in my head when lenses are concerned. It's not the Mobil Economy Run down in here. YMMV.)

There is no direct substitute for the 500pf in the Z roadmap, which is why I asked. Plus, the 500pf exists and the others not only are not direct replacements, they don't exist.

Anyway, back to my original question, any reason not to use a Z 50 instead of a D500 with the 500pf, or any reason not to just use crop mode with the Z 9 and just dispense with DX bodies entirely, if trying to get extra reach with that particular lens? It's a theoretical question for me at this point, just trying to get some information from those who might have tried both. Thanks in advance.

Crop mode (DX) vs cropping: There is nothing to say you cannot use the crop mode in the Z9 or any other Nikon digital. It's either that or cropping.

If needed, I choose to crop after the shoot. That way, I still have FX if the animal is close enough. I like to put as many pixels on the subject as possible.

Until the Z9 is delivered and I start using it, my go-to will continue to be the D850.

Anyone know where the D850 thread is? Can't find it.
