If using strobes is the goal, try stopping down two stops from camera setting to make the photo overall darker. Adjusting only the shutter can give you the preferred ambient light (darker/lighter). An aperture of approximately f/2.8 can create nice separation from the backdrop too. Adding a simple strobe w/a soft box (diffusion) at more or less a 45 degree angle will soften harsh light give nicer contrast. As mentioned, just adjust the light power settings. Shooting B/W creates more artistic expression without dealing with WB.
