Dunes Windstorm

This week I’ve been working on some unprocessed raw images from an intense windstorm over the dunes at White Sands NP. My first concern was protecting my gear, so I hiked out with two Sony A7RV’s and did not do lens changes - one had a 24-70 GMII and the other body a 70-200 GMII. Second, I kept the cameras zipped up in my backpack until it was time to make a composition. Then back at camp I used the powerful Metro DataVac Electric Duster to thoroughly clean bodies and lenses. This all worked well and I had no residual dust/sand issues afterward.

Depending on time of afternoon/evening, and whether I was on the edge of the dune fields or hiked a mile inside, the conditions gave me a range of subtle color tones from cool to warm, and a lot of soft, glowing, ethereal light along with some occasional breaks of harder light and strong edges. In most of the images you can see sand blowing like waves, and bright lines on the dune edges where sand was moving briskly like a flowing river. It was a little freaky to be out there, but an exciting and satisfying image-making experience.
