I visited there for the first time last year but seeing this series makes me want to go back. The windy conditions, and absence of the intense blue sky really added to the feeling of minimalism.
A strong set of images and well done, Ross!!
Thank you, Al! It’s an interesting place to shoot. On my first trip several years ago I was initially disappointed because White Sands does not have the tall, curvy dune peaks of places like Death Valley, but then I began to see that the white sand picking up nuanced color made it worth being there. My first time there my images were really boring, I’ve had to learn how to shoot there on subsequent trips. And getting out before the deadline of gate closing is always hugely stressful, as I’m a mile out and have made my last shot at dusk, then have to book it back to the car faster than my lungs and heart want to allow. I’ve read that folks who are late get locked in for awhile before an unhappy ranger comes back to let them out and often with a hefty fine.
