It was with great sadness that I learned that a good friend, fellow musician and band mate passed away at 84 in Rochester, NY.
Charles Frank Mangione was an American flugelhorn player, trumpeter and composer. Mangione came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey's band in the 1960s, and later co-led the Jazz Brothers with his brother, Gap, achieving international success in 1978 with his jazz-pop.
I was a "session bassist" at the re-occuring Capital Jazz Fest music festivals here in N.Va(WolfTrap), Merriweather Post Pavilion and Ft Meade, MD for many years.
My next door neighbor was Scott Ambush of Spyro Gyra and I "sat in" for Scott when we played here in Frederick, Md@Wienberg Center for the Arts.
RIP and rock on my brother! This was in 1999.
