The 400-800 is a little specialised and it took me some time to adapt to, as I am so used to using only the 200-600 for aerial displays. I found that it was a little more challenging to acquire and track fast jets at the long end. During close passes the “short” end was not short enough and I frequently chopped off wings and tails, and large parts of formations.

Yes, fast autofocus, great stabilisation and sharp, for sure. But I have only one body and I think the 400-800 needs to be paired with a complementary lens on another body, as you described that you do.

I enjoyed the extra reach of the 400-800, but missed the flexibility of the 200-600. It was in my bag, but of course not immediately available at the moments that I needed it. My initial impression is that for a one body shooter i.e. for me, the 200-600 is the more practical and flexible (and slightly brighter and lighter) option.
